Character Analysis: Grandpa Joad
The Joad family’s farm is taken by the bank because of the drought and they decide to travel west to California. Shortly after their departure Grandpa Joad, a bitter man who didn’t want to leave his home, passes away. Many people have the same idea as the Joad family, and during their travels they meet Ivy and Sairy Wilson and invite them to ride in the truck since their car broke down. Sairy is very sick and doesn’t make it passed the California border. As they near California they hear that there are little jobs and little food, and soon after Granma Joad dies. The rest of the family move from camp to camp looking for work. At first the people aren’t very nice and start many fights, and Noah and Connie decide to leave the family and do their own thing. But later they start making many friends and some work. Everything seems great, but when the policeman murders Casey, Tom kills the …show more content…
I think this is accurate because I have read about how they had a hard time making a life in California. I also think it would be very unlikely for a whole piece of land to not be occupied because people wanted more money.
Another thing I think is accurate is when the native people weren’t that nice to the new Okies. I think this is accurate the native people already lived their and I wouldn’t want a bunch of people to move into my home. I also think this scene is accurate because there were lots of Okies and more were arriving.The native people need the jobs the Okies were wanting and since they were their first they wanted the jobs.
I don’t think any events of portrayals were inaccurate because the film was created in a time that they could still compare the events in the film and in real life. I think the film was pretty accurate because it was based off a book and the timing was very close to when these scene

    The Dust Bowl that occurred in the 1930’s along with the Great Depression was one of the lowest times in American history. The novel, The Grapes of Wrath written by John Steinbeck, takes place during this time period. The Grapes of Wrath is told from the perspective of the Joads, who are coerced to leave their home and farm in Oklahoma. The novel documents their journey traveling from Oklahoma to California.     Of Couse a family need head with same noble qualities. In The Grapes of Wrath the family survival was much difficult in the wilderness of ‘Depression period’. The Joad family’s primary concern is survival in the ‘promised land’, for them the enemy was not only the nature but the authoritative Government too. Ma was head of the family at any cost tried to protect family unity. And she knows in the survival process more they need is unbroken family rather than money. Finally they made survival possible by collective effort. Here “collective effort” stands for Steinbeck’s ‘phalanx’ or ‘group man theory.’ Joads survival was possible because, which cost them loss of members like Grandparents (Granpa and Granma), two sons (Tom and Noah), and a still born baby of Sharon. Joad family survival takes other helps too like Wilson and his wife, Jim Casy, and a store keeper in the last cotton ranch and finally Mrs Wainwright. And Joad never forget to help the others, they have given lift for Cay and Wilson and his wife in the exodus to California.     When they arrive in Chicago (Packingtown) they are scammed into buying a house as well as at a loss of money for the unpaid wedding reception. Jurgis claims in order to fix this he will just work harder. Packingtown is known for the meat packing industry and also a main area of Lithuanian immigration. The family soon sets out to find jobs. Most of them find jobs quickly, but not “good” jobs. Most of the jobs in Packingtown are plagued with horrible working conditions, poor pay, and little respect from owners to workers. Jurgis’ father soon passes and Ona later has a son. Jurgis has much trouble throughout the book holding jobs due to injury or bad luck. When winter comes around in Packingtown the hardships get even harder and the ability to live becomes less likely then likely. Jurgis later finds out that his wife Ona is being forced by her boss to sleep with him. Jurgis assaults the man and is imprisoned. From this point on Jurgis struggles and so does his family. They lose their home; Ona passes away during childbirth and Jurgis’ son Antanas drowns. Jurgis is once again imprisoned for assault. He then reunites with Jack Duane and they become partners and Jurgis begins to work within the corruption of politics. Jurgis later tries to find what’s left of his family but soon becomes a lost soul until he stumbles into a socialist party meeting.…
