In “The Ones Who Walked Away,” the citizens and residents in this city seem to be happy and enjoy their life in the Omelas. Their life is full of peace and happiness even though they know the real reason for their happiness and the cruelty behind it. In the Omela’s the people know of the existence of a child who is living under terrible circumstances but yet they still go on with their lives as if though nothing is happening. The reason for this is because an unknown character placed terms on the city of Omelas where if they express some sort of compassion to the child suffering, all of their happiness and prosperity will change to the total opposite. Race and mass incarceration. It is a harsh topic for many, but Ava DuVernay’s documentary 13th provides all of the background information needed for that conversation. On the other hand, the Selma director’s film manages to capture the depth and insidiousness of more than a century of cultural, societal and economic oppression along racial lines and then condenses it into a brisk 100-minute movie. At the end of the year, Mr. Tushman, the middle school director, had told him he “wished he and Jack would have came to him about the notes”(p.473). Even though teachers are supposed to be mature, it doesn’t mean they always act that way.
