Calpurnia is very respectful towards Atticus and his kids. For instance, she calls Jem Mister and always shows kindness towards Atticus. In contrast, Alexandra tries to tell Atticus how to raise his children and run the house. In the text it states, “Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subject of my attire.” (81). This shows how she wants to raise the children differently than Atticus has. Furthermore, Calpurnia and Alexandra have similar character traits because they both believe a child should grow up with limits. For instance, Calpurnia raised the children to listen to what she and Atticus tell them as well as Alexandra while she stays with the Finch family. Their character traits are one way to compare and contrast Calpurnia and Aunt Alexandra.…

Describe Miss Caroline's interactions with Burris Ewell. What does this suggest about Miss Caroline? What does this suggest about the Ewells? 4. Who is Calpurnia? Because Radley has a lot of rumours. “People said he went out at night when the moon was high, and peeped in windows. When people’s azaleas froze in a cold snap, it was because he had breathed on them. Any stealthy crimes committed in Maycomb were his work.” Their lifestyles are very different, special and incomprehensible. “The Radleys, welcome anywhere in town, kept to themselves, a predilection unforgivable in Maycomb. They did not go to church, Maycomb’s principal recreation, but worshipped at home; Mrs Radley seldom if ever crossed the street for a mid-morning coffee break with her neighbours and certainly never joined a missionary circle. Mr.Radley walked to town at eleven-thirty every morning and came back promptly at twelve; sometimes carrying a brown paper bag that the neighbourhood assumed contained the family groceries’.” They are also mysterious to the children.” I never knew how old Mr.Radley made his living-Jem said he ‘bought cotton’, a polite term for doing nothing – but Mr.Radley and his wife had lived there with their two sons as long as anybody could remember.” The children themselves are really curious." He would stand hugging the light-pole on the corner, the more he would wonder.” The house is mysterious, too. “The house was low, was once white with a deep front porch and green shutters, but had long ago darkened to the colour of the…

The lesson taught to Scout by Calpurnia was that you if you invite someone over, you let them eat however they want to eat. Aunt Alexandra, is the sister of Atticus and aunt to Scout and Jem. Social status is in high regard in her mind. She sees Calpurnia as more of an object than as a person. She does not accept Calpurnia as part of the family, as Atticus, Jem, and Scout do. Aunt Alexandra moves in with the family during the trial of Tom Robinson, because she feels as though Scout looks up to Calpurnia as more of a motherly figure. In ways she wants Scout to obey the social law at that time in Maycomb that black people were to be looked down upon. Aunt Alexandra says, “Put my bag in the front room, Calpurnia.”(169) She automatically takes the assumption that Calpurnia is more of a slave than a helper in the household. This quote shows Aunt Alexandra’s opinions on colored people, which are not very appropriate.…
