Change of Command Opening Prayer
It is my privilege to open this ceremony with prayer. I invite each of you to bow and pray according to the direction of your own faith tradition as I will in mine or simply to keep a moment of respectful silence.

Almighty God, You spoke the worlds into existence from nothing. We bow before you today in acknowledgement of Your greatness. We are humbled; that the Glorious King of Eternity would call us His own dear children. We are grateful that through faith in Your Son we can enter Your presence and find mercy and grace to help us when we are in need. Father, when You placed men on this earth You established governments. You further established that these governments would raise armies for the protection of people who do good from people who do evil. In the Oklahoma Army National Guard we take seriously this responsibility and sacred trust. In a world of continuous moral decay with evil on every hand, You have blessed us with leaders of strong character and stalwart faith who look to You for guidance and provide examples for others to follow. Today we say goodbye to one of those leaders. We thank you for the leadership of Col Hurtado. We thank you for his unwavering belief that the affairs of men are governed by Your divine Providence. We thank you for the great things he has done for this brigade. We pray for your continued blessings upon his life and the life of his family as he goes on from here. Keep him under your protection, strengthen his spirit for the challenges ahead, and continue to deepen his wisdom, encourage him, sustain him and widen his influence. Father, today we are receiving a new leader in Col. Chase. He has been sent to us through the machinations of Your providence. Give him humility to exercise his authority for the good of those he leads. Grant him the wisdom to make decisions that honor you, increase the effectiveness of the brigade, and encourage the hearts of his soldiers. Let his influence light the way for the

It saddens me to hear about the complete lack of value to the war effort put on by this small group of Americans. That key leaders given the authority to effect change sit idle while lives are lost. But then, as I stomach that blow, I focus on their true grit, their courage, their resolve, their valor, the bravery, their fearlessness, their dedication, the sheer tenacity of these Hero’s, and I am reminded of why our country is so great. God bless those that lost their lives in this battle, and the families that they left…

Ethics, morals, and values is what leaders must revert to when faced with difficult decisions, mental agility and experience is a critical attribute possessed by all great leaders. Lt. Audie L. Murphy’s name stands as one of the most prominent in American military history. He was a figurehead of leadership and the epitome of the seven Army Values (Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage). He was a model for every soldier to follow, one that overcame every odd that was ever against him and rose to conquer every challenge. In his personal memoir “To Hell and Back”, he expressed a very personal view of what it takes to embody these characteristics which would eventually encourage anyone who reads it. In the next few paragraphs I will expound on his leadership and analyze what it really takes to be a leader.…

I constantly reminded my brothers in arms, general and officers, that the ranks to which they'd been raised were nothing but the reward for honor, bravery and irreproachable conduct. That the higher they were above their fellow citizens, the more irreproachable all their actions and words must be; that scandals caused by public men had consequences even more dire for society than those of simple citizens; that the ranks and functions they bore hadn’t been given to them to serve only their ambition, but had as cause and goal the general good. ...…

General George Washington has always supported and believed in us soldiers. He’s the one who went out of his way to beg for supplies from the Congress.
