As a support worker I need to be alert at all times and to be prepared to analyse and adapt to everyone’s needs for communication. The way I work and relate to the individuals I support can help or hinder them to have the proper care or needs attended. There are so many ways of communicating and almost every person is able to communicate in some way. It is vital that i act in a way that shows i am interested in them and that they have my undivided attention. I should always let them speak and not interupt them or try and finish their sentances, i should respond with single questions so as not to bombard and confuse them, and i must always allow them time to think and to give their response and never try and answer for them. I should use closed questions at…

In my role, it is important that I can communicate in the correct way to ensure that the needs of the service user are understood and are dealt with correctly. Effective written and verbal communication and being able to use a variety of interpersonal techniques helps to promote strong working relationships and will promote good quality care for the service user. For example when I meet a service user on the initial visit we discuss their needs and wishes to ensure they receive the appropriate care and support package that is individually tailored to meet there needs. I hold regular review meetings with the service user, the key worker, family members and other professionals to establish any changing needs. I contact the service user regularly by telephone to ensure that everything is working well with the service. I also hold regular staff meetings and one to one meetings to ensure effective open communication between the office and the staff on duty. This enables staff to raise any concerns that they may have and for actions to be implemented to reduce or eliminate the concern. I produce reports, update…

Bi - An outline of what is meant by ‘agreed ways of working’. The term ‘agreed ways of working’ relates to the way an employee must work and the rules that they must adhere to. As an employee you should work in a way that is clearly set out in the job description – this will then mean that you know what areas of care you would be responsible for and those that should be reported to a higher member of staff etc. The ‘agreed ways of working’ have been set out in accordance with the policies and procedures of the care organization, for example, the health and safety policies and procedures or the safeguarding of vulnerable adults. The employee will/should be informed about any updates that will be put in place in the policies and procedures – this would usually be passed over in handover or in a staff meeting. The policies and procedures should be regularly updated, documented in hard form i.e. on paper, kept in a file and easily accessible to all staff. Informal supervisions, for example, observations, will enable the employer to identify the employee’s strengths and weaknesses; thus proving if they are working to the ‘agreed ways’. Appraisals can be just one formal way that offers both the employee and employer the opportunity to resolve the weaknesses through discussion and suggestions can be made for improvement.…
