As individuals, different employees will show different personalities and traits. For instance, when going through the assessments with Tammy, I found that she loses interest and becomes distracted easily. Then I found out that she actually has ADHD, an attention disorder. Working with her, one…
After watching the pathway testimonial video, I definitely can relate with the Lemons story. It is difficult to interrupt a busy life to try to find the time to go back to school. When you're working full time and you have a family it’s extremely hard to find the time to better your education. It is actually ironic if you think about it. You want to better your education so you can find a job that you enjoy and be able to spend more time with your family so it's definitely a sacrifice. I have yet to find the balance in my life to be able to work, be a mom and be a wife and still have time to breathe at the end of the day. I know that finding that balance will come in time as long as I continue to pray to Heavenly Father and I stay motivated…

Based on Robert’s behavior and comments, Brittany was experiencing a hostile environment sexual harassment. Robert is a co-worker whose behavior is unwelcome and inappropriate; therefore creating a workplace that is intimidating, hostile, and/or offensive. His behavior was due to Brittany’s gender and physical attributes. She often witnessed him staring at the photo of her in her bathing suit and making lewd comments regarding her body. She requested he stop making comments because it made her uncomfortable. Shortly after, she found that he scanned the photo to his computer. Upon confronting him again, Robert went to her supervisor complaining that she was not informing him of his messages in a timely manner, which was not true.…

Since our readings focused more on discrimination in the workplace, I decided to describe some of the common causes of disconcertion in the work environment. One of the causes is a hostile work environment, if an employee is the subject to constant harassment, or not being included in activities based on factors such as race, or religion. Also salary employers are barred from paying employees differently for the same type of work based on any prohibited factors. Refusal to promote is another common cause if the employee who would otherwise be given a promotion is refused because of factors such as race, or disability that employee may be able to file a law suite. Discrimination in the workplace is very common, and there are times when someone is looked over, because some race or gender, and these things are not fair every employee should be treated fairly.…

Intent vs. Perception. Antoinette Mayer worked for DigiSys, a multimillion dollar technology company where many of the company’s senior managers were retired military officers. Jay Strong, her boss, became very friendly in an awkward way with Mayer one day where his conversation moved from business topics to more personal conversation. As time progressed, he got “warmer” towards Mayer; seemed to encounter her more in the company cafeteria and requested more of her time under the pretense of gathering updates. After many encounters like this, she decided to do something about it so she went to the Human Resources vice president for assistance. He told her that he didn’t think she had much of a case. The company was full of military types who had not quite got the hang of working with women in the civilian sector. As a black woman, she had done her share of educating and was probably tired of it, but pursuit of an investigation wasn’t worth her career and she should lighten up a little. According to CMU (2008), more than half of US women executives say they have suffered sexual harassment. Harassment results in stress, absenteeism, productivity declines, turnover, and lawsuits. Solutions include raising awareness, providing training, and consistent enforcement of clearly communicated rules and penalties. Murren (2011) states that every place of employment has a different demeanor. Most employees do mesh well together finding their groove over a period of time. There are instances, however, when workplace behavior can get out of hand and be inappropriate, causing a rift between employees. Many companies today hold yearly ethics courses designed to pinpoint an acceptable quality of behavior from their employees and also open up the floor to those who have issues with the company and its policies. Sometimes confronting an issue head on in a supportive environment will help find a positive solution to any issues of harassment or workplace abuse. Harassment…
I noticed a lot of problems while reading this case study. The first thing that caught my attention was that there was a lot of diversity in the workplace. The owners were hiring a lot of people from different countries, which means they have different backgrounds and cultures. This could lead to big problems if Carol and Bruce don’t know how to handle the differences between cultures. Already someone brought up that they had a problem taking orders from women. A simple solution is for Carol and Bruce to do some diversity training and talking with all the employees about what they find to be a cultural norm for them. From there, they can work with the employees and create strategies to overcome any obstacles.…
In the work environment, the representative heuristic and conjunctive fallacy is prevalent. For better or worse, as new people enter into our work lives, we will tend to “classify” them into a category, so we can grasp an understanding of whom they are, how to interact with them.…
Discrimination happens when an employer treats one employee less favorable than others. If could mean that a female employee being paid less than a male colleague for doing the same job. Also, it could involve minority ethnic employee being refused the training opportunities offered to white colleagues. There are laws against discrimination regarding to status of gender, marital, pregnancy, sexual orientation, disability, race, color, ethnic background, nationality, religion, and beliefs. Although, sexual orientation and gender identity have no relationship to workplace performance, during past few decades a high level of discrimination is happening in work places. In this case, Maria claims that she has become the victim of workplace discrimination by not getting promotion, being criticize for her accent, and using couple tardiness as an excuse to her obtaining lower evaluation. According to Harvey (2011), “Initially, diversity was defined by the dimensions protected under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (race, color, national origin, religion, and sex). As more legislation protecting specific groups such as people with disabilities and older workers was passed, more categories were added” (p. xii). These types of scenarios must happen frequently that we might not be aware of; however, upon inspecting this faults could expose opportunities, acceptance, determination, and acknowledgement for diverse worker groups. Importance on reducing prejudiced scenarios in corporations should be one of our top priorities due to diversity spreading among nations. The management could be making a mistake by not promoting Maria due to her belonging to another ethnic group, being prejudiced, and favoring an employee that does not well deserve.…
