A competitive strategy based on quality is the best fit for Riordan Manufacturing. The Riordan mission focuses on leading and exceeding industry standards for quality, including those set by the ISO 9000. Riordan's competitive strategy includes leading industry research and development which gives the organization opportunity to adapt to external factors ahead of competitors. Developing new and innovative materials and ones that are environmentally sustainable satisfies Riordan's desire to be "a solution provider for our customers" (Riordan Manufacturing, 2012). Similar to Starbucks Corporation, Riordan Manufacturing produces a valuable product with high quality. The plastics manufactured at Riordan Manufacturing, produce a high-end bottle well known throughout the world. As Starbucks corners the market in coffee, Riordan Manufacturing does the same in plastic. Another competitive advantage is the ease of effectiveness of the products and the manufacturing. Riordan Manufacturing operates with highly efficient manufacturing plants in three locations throughout the world. These plants operate with the environment in mind and are constantly evaluating the process to determine if ‘there are ways to make the process more efficient in the use of polymers” (Riordan Manufacturing, 2012). Starbucks also takes into account the environment and their affect that the products have on the environment and do their best to reduce the amount of waste. Both organizations commit to improving the environment if possible whereas still returning a strong product and producing quality services. The global presence at Riordan Manufacturing is a competitive advantage over competition that has one location.
