The functional structure is a traditional departmentalization design. It divides employees according to their job specialties. People with similar specialties will be grouped in the same department (Aquinas, 2008).
As a small sole proprietorship company with limited employees, functional structure is useful. Our company provides booking the hotels and air tickets services in Asian countries, such as Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, and China, so there is no tour guide. Our target group is Hong Kong citizens. We are now not able to use the divisional structure which groups employees, according to similar services or targeted locations. Because of limited locations and services provided and customers served, we are more suitable to use functional structure at this stage instead of divisional structure. We may move to the divisional structure when we are able to expand our services to western countries (Jones,

In the organizational structure, unity of command is shown clearly. Six managers are required to manage and supervise their subordinates and report directly to Chief Director. This can prevent conflicting messages and increase efficiency toward the leader's request (Lussier, 2011). Flat structure reduces the time of transmitting messages, thus reduce operating costs. Moreover, it allows closer and better communication between employer and employees. Employees can easily express their opinion towards company's policies to the superior (Rakoczy, 2010). With the better relationship, employees will have a higher sense of belonging and they are willing to pay in the effort and work for the company.
In conclusion, our company adopts functional departmentalization and flat structure as our organizational structure. Due to limited services provided to Hong Kong citizens, it is now more appropriate to use functional structure than divisional structure. But we look forward to moving to the divisional structure when we extend our services to western countries. Besides, the flat structure can reduce operating costs and enhance better communication between subordinates and
