In the United States there are nearly 12 million undocumented immigrants that are denied affordable access to healthcare (Rosen, 2012). In 2010 President Barack Obama signed into law The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) with the intention to expand economical healthcare to the millions of uninsured residents across the United States. However, this law excludes undocumented immigrants from receiving health insurance from the Marketplace, Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) (D’Emilia & Suplee, 2012). The exclusion from the Marketplace, Medicaid and CHIP for undocumented immigrants furthers the gap of accessible healthcare as they are ineligible for governmental aid even though the foreign-born population has higher rates of poverty, lower education levels, and lower rates of health care coverage compared to U.S. born residents (Edward,…

The American Dream is described by The Free Dictionary as, “An American ideal of a happy and successful life to which all may aspire” ("Definition," 2013, p. 1) yet this can mean different things to different people. To this student it means happiness, prosperity, health, freedom, and the ability to makes choices according to what this student believes in. For other people, the American Dream will mean similar and probably different things. To many Americans the ability to have health care is a part of the American Dream. Obtaining health care insurance and being able to choose the insurance they can afford is part of their own American Dream. This choice usually comes through their employer or through being self-employed and choosing the appropriate health care insurance. This piece of the American Dream is becoming increasingly expensive and unobtainable. This student will explore current national health care expenditures, is there is too much spent or not enough if cuts need to be made, how health care needs are paid for, and a forecast of the economic needs of the health care system.…

The Industry- The main force is the pharmaceutical industry. With $291 billion in annual sales, the pharmaceutical industry is the fastest-growing and most profitable sector of the US economy, and spending on prescription drugs is the fastest-growing category of health-care expense. Big Pharma spends $3 billion a year marketing drugs directly to consumers, and another $15 billion each year marketing to doctors, who they hope will prescribe their products. The hidden purpose and obvious result is to drive sales of drugs that may not be necessary or appropriate for an individual. Physicians are indeed increasingly likely to write prescriptions.…

After researching a few reasons why health care is rising, it all came down to the industry exploring new medical technologies. It occurred to me that this should be a good thing because better technology means more people can be treated with better care. However, an increase in medical technology will become more expensive. It can tend to cost more than older versions of treatment. Nevertheless, the total cost is still a function of the amount of people that are receiving treatment for a condition. The rise in a treated-case could reflect improvements in medical technology that will allow treatment to a particular condition. According to the article “Which Medical Conditions Account for the Rise in Health Care Spending?”, several studies…

Today, health care costs are rising significantly faster than the national income. Kellerman (2012) states, “The U.S. spends far more on health care per capita and as a percentage of GDP than any other nation on earth, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development” (para. 3). Furthermore, health care spending has become a paramount issue that is overshadowing other important affairs, such as education. The level of current national health expenditures, why spending is too much, evaluation of where the nation should cut or add spending, examination of financing of health care, and a forecast of future economic needs of the health care system will be explored.…
