Cantona Kung Fu Kick
Cantona Kung Fu kick
On 25 January 1995 Manchester United legend Eric Cantona was involved in an incident that attracted headlines and controversy worldwide. In an away match against Crystal Palace, Cantona was sent off by the referee for a kick on Palace defender Richard Shaw after Shaw had pulled his shirt. As he was walking towards the tunnel, Cantona launched a 'Kung-Fu' style kick into the crowd, directed at Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons, a fan who had run down 11 rows of stairs to confront and shout abuse at Cantona. Eric then followed the infamous kick with a series of punches. Cantona was arrested and convicted for assault, resulting in a two-week prison sentence. This was overturned in the appeal court and instead he was sentenced to 120 hours of community service, which was spent coaching children at United's training ground. At a press conference called later, Cantona gave what is perhaps his most famous quotation. Cantona said, in a slow and deliberate manner: "When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much".

Upon the release of partial video footage of the assault the NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, banned Rice for two games without pay and fined him $58,000. Many felt that this punishment was insufficient and this message was continued to be reinforced through constant media coverage on the matter. This then led to Goodell revising the league’s policy on assault, battery, domestic violence and sexual assault, instituting a six-game suspension for NFL personnel who violate the policy once, and a lifetime ban for those who do so twice. Although the revision seemed like a step in the right direction, what was to follow was like fuel to the fire for the media.…

As the wounded 49ers sulked back into the locker rooms, the victorious Seahawks ran rampant across the field, congratulating each other, and some doing interviews for the local and national press. Erin Andrews, a reporter for ESPN, managed to lasso the game’s hero Richard Sherman in hopes of a thorough break down of the prior play in which All-Pro cornerback, Sherman, athletically deflected a pass meant for 49ers reciever Michael Crabtree, resulting in an easy interception by the Seahawks. “I’m the best corner in the game!”, screamed Sherman. “Don’t you EVER talk about me!” Per Anderews request, Sherman made it clear that he was talking about the ‘sorry’ receiver, Crabtree. This rant was apparently fueled Crabtree rejection of Sherman’s handshake, and Crabtree’s ensuing shove to the head. Unbeknownst to Andrews and the 56 million people watching nationwide, the rant by the loud-mouthed Sherman would set off a media firestorm that challenged the barriers of race, aggression, and character.…
