Canadian Geography: Exam Review
UNIT 1: CHAPTERS 2-7

Small-scale map- map that shows a small amount of detail for a large area.
Eg; 1:250 000

Large-scale map- map that shows a large amount of detail for a small area.
Eg; 1:50 000

Types of Maps

General-purpose Maps * Provide information on one map * E.g. atlas, road maps, etc.…
Features
* Bodies of water * Roads & railway lines * Parks, Towns & Cities * Elevations, longitude & latitude

Thematic Maps * Give specific information about a place on one theme or topic

Topographic Maps * Large scale maps that show both natural & human-made features * Use symbols to show a variety of features including; * Contour lines: showing change in elevation * Grid system: locating places on the map

Compass Rose & Angular bearings

Compass points- direction on a compass, such as north and south

Compass rose- diagram that shows directions and bearings used to indicate directions on a map

Compass bearings- degrees in a compass, measured clockwise from 0-360 degrees

Military Grid

Easting- first three figures in a map reference giving the east-west location
Northing- last three figures in map reference giving the north-south location

Contours & Elevation

Contour lines- joins places of the same elevation above sea level * Never just end, they close to make circles or continue off the page

* Never intersect or cross each other * When crossing a river they indicate a valley by bending upstream

* The spacing indicates the nature of the slope * Spaced out = gentile slope * Close together= steep slope * Spaced evenly= uniform slope

Longitude & Latitude

Longitude-distance from east to west of the prime meridian

Latitude-distance north to south of the prime meridian
