. I am Farhana Rahman. I would be a good disease detective camp counselor because I am motivated, hardworking and no matter what type of work it is, I try to accomplish it with honesty, love and respect. I got the motivation from the CDC Disease Detective Camp Counselors of 2016. All of them seemed to be so happy being with us. They were so friendly and so caring. I got the inspiration from them to be a counselor. I just do not want to be a counselor because they are going to give the stipend money but it’s because honestly when I was a camper, I really loved that week that I spent at CDC. I love being there and I have learned many things. Through this counselor position I can lead the new campers to learn and enjoy. It was an incredible opportunity…

I was a camp counselor at Camp Wabikon ‒ a co-ed overnight summer camp located in Temagami, Ontario for children who are 6-15 years of age. Along with teaching Red Cross swimming and lifesaving and Tennis, I was my cabin's 'parent' for six weeks. Therefore, I was present with the children at all times. In essence, I was the leader of my cabin's the physical, social and mental development. The main things I learned were the importance of time management and organization , as I had to plan lessons for swimming and Tennis while taking care of my cabin; conflict resolution between campers; and the ability to plan and foresee events (I had to plan camp-wide events and activities for all campers).…

It was in the muggy day in the middle of July and I was stuck outside watching a bunch of bratty kids run around in the woods playing tag and hide and seek. A few months earlier, I was applying for the Camp Counselor job at the M.E Lyons YMCA, which would be my first job. In the beginning of the summer, I had no idea that being a counselor would be extremely challenging, but very rewarding in the end.…

My time being camp counselor was definitely one of the best experiences I've had so far. My experience as a camp counselor I acquired leadership skills, organized activities, identified and responded to behavioral problems, and communicated concerns with parents. I believe my experience as a camp counselor has already provided me a good foundation for being a teacher. I intend to be apart of Teach for America to explore my strengths, weaknesses, and acquire teaching techniques to address the different needs of individual learners. I believe the teacher’s role will help me to develop myself, both academically and personally. Being an educator you make an influential impact on a child’s life that will shape their youth, and stay with them through adulthood. I have every confidence that I have the necessary qualities to become a school teacher and be apart of the Teach For America…

When the realization that my final days of high school were vastly approaching, I began to ask myself what I would do with my life. From that point, the thoughts began to creep in of what things I could do to help better prepare myself for the future that was being pushed upon me. Seeing that I have known since a young age that I wanted to be an educator, my exploration of a summer job that would involve surrounding myself with children began. After endless hours of internet searching for the job that would best suit me, I discovered a Christian summer camp that was very much a place that would cease to leave my mind for the next few days. Days passed by and prayers were sent up when I finally came to realize that this was the job I needed. Working at a Christian summer camp would be a great job for any young person because it is a way to spread God’s word with young girls, push limits and set new goals, and it exposes the counselor to see what teachers and educators face on a day to day basis.…

I was given the opportunity to be a teachers’ assistant for a 300 level nutrition counseling course. My duties were hands-on and included leading an inter-disciplinary approach to education with the nutrition and theatre departments. Theatre students were trained to act as patients and nutrition students had the opportunity to practice their assessment, counseling and communication skills. I was in charge of making sure the sessions ran smoothly and addressed any questions or concerns students had. With my commitment and interpersonal skills I was a Women of Promise Recipient and I received a junior…

When growing up, the idea of enrolling in summer camp was quite daunting, and I hated it because I was not comfortable with meeting new people; I was very shy. However, I had to face these fears when I attended Roughing It Day Camp because my school counselor suggested that I do so. I started as an eighth grader in the Junior High Girls Group. On my first day of summer camp, I was welcomed into a group of girls who were excited to be at camp. Their optimism soon rubbed off on me when I started going to fun activities where we all bonded as a group. During the summers of 2013 and 2014, I participated in the Campers in Leadership Training (CILT) program, where campers entering the ninth and tenth grade would learn leadership skills by working…
