Camillo Cavour
Camillo Cavour is a known leader towards the Italian unification. Also known as the
“Brain of unification”. He died at a young age of 51. His lifespan was from 1810 to 1861. He was born in Turin during the Napoleonic rule. He had one sibling, an older brother. They were both educated at home initially. Until Cavour was sent away to the Turin Military Academy when he was about 10 years old. They were very strict and cruel. He often had disagreements with the authorities because he was just too stubborn. Cavour did not very well like the military life at fist. He’d prefer politics and studies. He did not take to authority easily. He was very headstrong when it came to his thoughts and views.
For being caught reading some books that the Academy had banned, he was punished for three days. He was forced to live three days on nothing else but bread and water. He enjoyed English
Literature very much but he was so intelligent in the mathematics. After that was realized, he was enlisted in the Piedmontese-Sardinian Army. The enlistment was in 1827. While in the core, he studied the English Language. Also studied the works of philosophers and thinkers such as
Jeremy Bentham and Benjamin Constant. In November 1831, Cavour ended his career in the military. He genuinely grew bore with the life and was upset with the way the new ruler was acting, Charles Albert. After he left the military he took his time and used it to travel. Cavour went to
Switzerland and spent some time with his Protestant relatives in Geneva. While being there, he grew infatuated with the Calvinist teachings and views. He did revert but eventually reverted back. Cavour was impressed with a pastor, Alexandre Vinet. Alexandre had shown Cavour a doctrine that he will follow for the rest of his life. After, he moved onto Paris. There he was impressed by parliamentary debates. Those of Francois Guizot intrigued him. It was then he had realized he was meant for
