1. Jennifer Trucking Company operates a large rig transportation business in Texas that transports locally grown vegetables to San Diego, California. The company owns 5 large rigs and hires local drivers paid fixed salaries monthly, regardless of the number of trips or tons of cargo that each driver transports each month. The below table presents details about the number of drivers and the total cargo transported by the company at different staff levels.

Drivers employed Total Cargo Transported (tons)

8 50 a. Which inputs are fixed and which are variable in the production function of Jennifer Trucking Company? Over what ranges do there appear to be increasing, constant and/or diminishing returns to the number of drivers employed?

The inputs that are fixed are the driver’s monthly salaries. The variable inputs are the amount of trips the drivers take and the amount they haul each time. Drivers 1, 2, and 3 appear to be delivering a diminishing return due to their low number of tons delivered. Drivers 5, 6, 7, and 8 are increasing returns due to their high weight deliveries and driver 4 appears to be constant.

b. What number of drivers appears to be most efficient in terms of output per driver?

Four drivers appear to be most efficient in terms of output per driver (drivers 5, 6, 7, 8). Their total cargo transported is only a few tons between one another.

c. What number of drivers appears to minimize the marginal cost of transportation assuming that all drivers are paid the same salary?

Drivers 1, 2, and 3 appear to be minimizing the marginal cost of transportation assuming that all drivers are paid the same salary. Driver 4 seems to be within the median, neither minimizing the marginal cost of transportation nor maximizing efficiency.

2. The Palms Dry Cleaning Shop in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, faces a highly seasonal demand for its services, as the snow-birds retirees’ flock to Florida in mid-fall to

We can define the truck performance as the capability of the truck to haul material between two or more points efficiently using all their own mechanical functions and characteristics. In order to understand this concept we should notice that two trucks, with the same characteristics and age, can have different production rates over the same route; that difference in their production rate should be address to some factors as their maintenance history (which affect their reliability), accidents and driver’s ability. Moreover, these differences could be bigger if we have a fleet composed by trucks from different models and makers.…

As you hop into a taxicab in Las Vegas, the meter will immediately read $3.30; this is the “drop” charge made when the taximeter is activated. After that initial fee, the taximeter will add $2.40 for each mile the taxi drives[1]. In this scenario, the total taxi fare depends upon the number of miles ridden in the taxi, and we can ask whether it is possible to model this type of scenario with a function. Using descriptive variables, we choose m for miles and C for Cost in dollars as a function of miles:…

The Chariot Shuttle Service Inc. (CSSI) makes money by providing transportation to customers in exchange for money. A typical day involves a shuttle van driving around the city, mostly between the airport and various locations. For example, a van may start the day by picking up three passengers from a local hotel and dropping them off at the airport. Two of these passengers are a husband and wife traveling together and the wife pays for both of them. (the couple is considered to be one customer, only the information of the contact person will be recorded in CSSI’s database). The other person just happened to be staying at the same hotel and had also called CSSI for a ride to the airport. This one trip to the airport thus consists of two service engagements. At the airport, six more passengers get on. Three of them are co-workers who need to go to a local manufacturing plant and whose corporation has an account with CSSI. One passenger needs to go to Hotel A and the other two passengers need to go to Hotel B. Customers may either be individuals or corporations.…
