Bullying Should Be Taught In Schools Essay
The controversy is on! The Supreme Court has ruled to have limits on what students can say in the school newspaper. After a battle between the Supreme Court and the District Court, they've came to a conclusion that the school newspaper should be about educational news only. Personally, I agree; some teens are bullied each day, students are rebellious, and teachers should limit them mainly because its school property.
We all know that some students just don't care. They are rebellious and do not really care about whose feelings they hurt. For example, if a non-caring student happens to be a part of Journalism, they're more than likely going to say things they aren't supposed to or they aren't going to do anything at all. I think that these classes need to have limits on what to say and things that are said in the newspaper should be school related only. I have learned from experience that things aren't always how we

Or that approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying? 17% of American students report being bullied 2 to 3 times a month or more within a school semester! Allowing students to freely publish the school newspaper could easily increase these numbers by ten! Teens bully other students by many different ways. For example, cyberbullying. It's the most common type of bullying in the United States. Why? Because some students do it without even realizing it! This could open another doorway for students to 'get revenge' on other classmates by posting embarrassing facts about them. Like I have said before, the school newspaper should be about school news only! There's so many things that could go wrong with having no limits on the newspaper. Some may say that giving students the free will to write whatever will prepare them for the real world but if students write things that are uncalled for it could lead to fights, disruption in the class, or even

In my opinion it reflects the majority being as it’s the school’s tabloid. I also believe the school has the right to remove pages if they deem the material inappropriate. I, _______, agree that school officials should be able to remove student publications when they believe material is unsuitable for younger students, or for reasons it could possibly disrupt the educational curriculum. If students are allowed "freedom of speech" other students could be slandered indirectly such as what occured in this case or fights may ensue due to disagreements. Yes, we as Americans have rights to speak our minds freely, but most students are minors and are under the supervision of the school. The school has the right to control what is allowed within its walls and must moniter students' doings in order to ensure the safety and eduaction of all students.…

It was simple to me. The school newspaper is about representing the whole school, not individual students themselves. Both sides could agree that the students were presenting their own views, but then this is where the sides start to split. The minority believed that since the students were expressing their own views, that the Tinker standard should apply. But, this was not applied because the students are not suppose to use the school newspaper as a public forum for discussion. The school newspaper is suppose to represent the whole school, and not just those writers. Therefore, the principal was doing nothing wrong by restricting the student’s rights when he censored and prevented the release of the articles in the…

case the principal refused approval to print. His reasoning was for the pregnancy article it mentioned birth control and sexual activity along with information from an anonymous source, but he felt readers would be able to figure out the person's identity. The divorce article was booted because it has a parents name. The court sided with the school because the newspaper is the schools (Brenyo). In this situation, the school does have the right to censor because it is their Newspaper, but they also missed out on an opportunity to address these important issues in a safe, professional setting and manner.…

I favored a loose interpretation in this case. Although students have rights, there is a need for certain rights to be restricted to avoid any disruptions and chaos within the student body. This is one case where I believe the school was using these restrictions properly to protect the rights and best interest of others. Even though the school newspaper is a form of public expression, the newspaper was school sponsored therefore it had every right to alter the paper.…

There are already problems of young adults not being taken seriously, this decision only worsens that. Student expression is extremely important and allowing censorship without clear cut rules blocks the thoughts of young minds. The Supreme Court needs to clear up questions regarding Hazelwood and the First Amendment eventually. Until then students will have to deal with the reduced protection of the First Amendment in schools and hope school officials won’t take advantage of the Hazelwood…

I image in every high school journalism class when an article is declined access into the school newspaper because it may be pushing the envelope most students will cry “freedom of speech.” I wonder how many of the school newspaper editors and/or principals are aware of this case and use it as a reference when talking to their students on why the article is being withheld. People still battle this issue every day. Yes we do have freedom of speech, but people need to be smart in how they use it. Teachers, principals, and many other professionals have lost their job over Facebook statues or a tweet. Recently, federal law just announced that you cannot lose your job over a Facebook post. The law just said that Facebook posts are protected under free speech. I wonder how that has effected the people that have already lost their jobs due to that issue. Are they able to get their old jobs back? The argument over free speech on Facebook posts has employers saying that it may affect their business or it makes the school look bad. Which makes it hard to argue against that in court. It will be interesting to see once the dust settles what the court decides on what is and isn’t ok when posting…

I believe that high schools should have open lunches. Students should be able to leave the school grounds and go to a fast food restaurant, or, if they choose should at least be able to go outside and eat. Students need to have a small break from school during the day, even if they are outside, they still can take their minds off of school work for a while. Students need to have fresh air and adequate sunlight. Fresh air and sunlight is a proven fact to help students in their studies and it also helps the students concentrate more. I understand that the school staff would not like the fact that the students would be able to leave campus without supervision. Are not the students in high school? Should we not have the responsibility to be able…

Literature is art, it's how authors express themselves, and that would take that opportunity away from them. Taking that away from an author is like taking away their ability to speak through the pages as they had before. Just because what is in a book doesn’t appeal to someone else, and it wouldn’t be good for a child to read them, doesn’t mean there has to be any sort of ban on any book. Adults may attempt to prohibit books because of suggestive behavior being displayed in them, although kids should be allowed to figure out the wrong from the right by themselves during their lives. Younger children should not be able to have their hands on books with bad behavior and profanity, but as they get older, adults should not heavily guard them from such things. Children need to learn about censorship for themselves at younger ages, while they learn quickly and more efficiently. The right of escaping the real world and enjoying a simple book should never be taken away from any person. Adolescents could very well be having a hard time in their life, and books could potentially help them. This can apply to school, too. If someone doesn't have a lot of friends, they are able to dive into the book and feel like they are a part of something bigger.…

Teenagers are reading more books than ever now, and some people say that we have Harry Potter to thank. But surrounding teen books is the 'myth' of book banning. Some may think that only old books were banned, and that they are now back on the shelves of schools and libraries around the country. This is not so. Not only have old classics such as The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger been banned, but newer books are being challenged as well. The controversy of book banning stems from the pursuit of knowledge. Though Hitler did many bad things in his lifetime schools still teach about the Holocaust, and yet now parents are requesting that their children do not learn what certain books have to offer in the way of knowledge. But some parents do not stop there. Books are being taken off school shelves, depriving all students instead of just one. Can one person influence a whole school or town? Is this even fair to everyone involved? The answer is no. Book banning should be illegal because reading a book is an individual choice, some books are banned without much thought, and sometimes books are banned without all parties involved reading it.…

With the censorship on books with social injustices such as drug use, abuse, rape, people arent able to learn about the social injustices that happen around the world. Issues like these happen in America and the government can't block them out to try and protect students from the truth because eventually it will come out. It is better to teach students about social injustices instead of blocking them from is so they can become educated in the issue. For example in a book called "Go Ask Alice" is a diary of a teenage girl who struggled with drug abuse, sex, and eventually ends up commiting suicide. The parents of the girl published her diary to raise awarness for these types of issues that teenagers struggle from. They wanted to educate the young and to help other families overcome these issues. The book was censored in many libraries because people felt it was to much for children to read and learn about. Students all over already understand many of these social issues and struggle from it themselves. Censorship only makes the issue worse by banning books that can help children educate…
