The chart illustrates the current salaries and wages, as well as what it would look like with different pay raises. The current salary is listed first, followed by a 2 percent increase, then an increase of 4 and 5 percent. The effect of pay raises for the department, would mean the overall city budget would be affected. Historically the department has received minimal salary increases. This past year salaries and wages saw only a 0.3% pay increase. Employee benefits did raise a modest 3.8%. The department seems overdue for a pay raise that would at least equal the cost of living increases. A 4% increase would appear to be the appropriate raise for the department for FY 2014.

Our society has become corrupt at each level, and the police force is no exception. While most officers are committed to maintaining honor and integrity in their service to the public, there will be crime or misconduct among both female and male officers (Gottschalk, 2011). Police officers should be upholding the image of sacrifice, dignity, and overall competency (Gottschalk, 2011). Unfortunately, corruption can happen and add distrust amongst the public toward the public service of police officers. These actions of misconduct can include oppression, racial profiling, physical or emotional abuse of power, overall mistreatment of citizens or prisoners in their care, extortion, misuse of information or perjury, and overall manipulation (Gottschalk, 2011).…

The individuals that work in the field of law enforcement today are presented with issues and concerns unlike any faced by those of the past. The changing face of crimes and criminal activity in this country and around the world are at the root of many of these challenges. In this country, the most significant issue is the shift to a more multicultural society. There are also concerns regarding police corruption, use of deadly force, racial profiling and the job hazards of policing in an increasingly dangerous world. As a society in the United States continues to become more diverse and rely more on technology, advances in policing techniques and strategies must change and become more advanced as well. Which is why, out of the ten most important trends in policing the top three are that: “technology will increasingly dominate the economy and society”,” mass migration will distribute the world’s population, creating new challenges for law enforcement in Western developed countries in terms of citizen diversity and increasing the need for police officers who can speak and understand many languages and different cultures”, and the “militant Islam will continue to spread and gain power, requiring the Western nations, and the United States…
