Chapter one of Joseph Campbell The Power of Myth with Bill Moyers presents different perspectives and theories on how myths are connected to our everyday lives. Campbell over the years has studied myths and given us an insight on how myths intertwine with religion. Religion is used to answer question that can’t be answered, for example “why do we die”. Campbell makes a connection by stating “Myths are clues to spiritual potentialities of the human life”. Then goes on to lecture about marriage, his words were very direct. Both Campbell and I share the same outlook of what Modern Society thinks about marriage, That it is the end to individual freedom versus the connection that two people share. With its "animatronics" technology, Jim Henson's 1982 film, The Dark Crystal, in both form and theme depicts key elements of David Leeming's description of the hero myth's rites of passage in The World of Myth: An Anthology. As in Leeming's rites of passage, in this film the protagonist's heroic experiences lead him to "wholeness" and "full individuation" (220). At the formal level, by concealing puppet strings, providing puppets with exceptionally life-like and fluid motions, and creating convincingly vital puppets, Henson's detail-rich and realistic animatronics technology allows his puppet-hero, Jen, to grow both beyond his filmic father figure, urSu, as well as beyond the confining puppet strings of the traditional puppet master. Thematically, too, Jen experiences the rites of "[being] born when . . . needed" (218), of being "call[ed] to adventure" (219), and of being faced with trials and danger (219), that Leeming discusses as making up the passage into individuation.…

In Legend by Marie Lu, the author uses flashbacks to show symbolism, foreshadowing, and the importance of the pendant to Day. At this point in the story, Day is still locked up and June feels that the Republic is untrustworthy. June has just brought Day the pendant that he lost a while back outside the hospital trying to steal plague medicine. As soon as Day sees the pendant he is surprised and happy, and then remembers his life when his dad was still around. In days flashback he remembers the first time he laid eyes the coin/pendant. “I managed to get a good look as he turned it over in his hands. A bird on one side, a man’s profile on the other.
