Raise your hand if you have ever felt fat. Everyone has those days where they just don't feel like they look nice, or that shirt or pair of jeans that they think makes them look like a whale when chances are, they don't look bad at all. Good afternoon judges, guests, and fellow 4-H'ers. My name is Jessica Marsden, and I've been a 4-H'er with the Rockets for nine years now. Today, on my last local achievement I'm going to talk to you about body image. Society has always placed great value on beauty of the human body, but a person's perception of their own body may not always shape up to the media's standards. Body image is a person’s mental opinion or description of his or her own physical appearance. It is generally is not based on facts, but is based on opinions and feelings of both the person and the people on the outside. However, someone's perception of their appearance is often different from how others actually see them. For example, many people who are actually very attractive may think that they aren't pleasing to the eye at all. Here's how body image basically works; it is generally used as a way for individuals to compare themselves with the "ideal" person, and for people to compare others through physical traits and characteristics, not always in a good way. People study their facial features and overall body weight and plot ways to look like who they think are the ideal person to look like . Body image can become a problem, and cause serious mental complications in a person. Concern with body image is generally more common with women than it is with men. Women usually are more critical of their looks than men are. However, in recent years men have become more concerned with their body image, significantly narrowing the gap between the two genders. A poor body image often accompanies a feeling of being overweight, especially with women. Men, on the other hand, want to be more muscular to look like all these hot male models.
