My team’s second prototype balsa wood tower performed significantly better than our first tower. The first tower held 27.5 lbs. while the second held 90 lbs. The main differences in the towers come from the increased thickness of load-bearing wood. We made the four corner pieces three sticks thick instead of only one stick. We also decreased the amount of cross pieces to make sure we were under weight. The both towers ended up crushing because the weight was unevenly distributed on the bottom. On the first tower, the cross pieces were opposite on either side, but on the second tower, the cross pieces mirrored on either side. Even though the second tower’s weight bearing strength was higher, it buckled under.…
In Northeastern tribes the people used dried bearskin, which was one of the artifacts displayed at the museum, primarily for bedding material. Although men usually hunted, women were responsible for preparing the pelts. After the flesh was removed from a skin, it was stretched out on the ground to dry. Pegs were then placed around the edge of the skin to keep it in place and reduce shrinkage. When it was also desirable to remove the hair, the next stage in the process was to tan the hide. Tanning involved the use of a mixture of purified brain, liver, and fat. This composite was applied to the flesh side of the skin and worked into it by hand. After several hours had elapsed (sometimes days), the skin was scraped and rubbed between the hands…

I invite you to explore Black Canyon on the western slope of the White Mountains, about 20 minutes east of Bishop, California. This obscure canyon is a highly colorful, deep slash in the earth that keeps its many charms secret to all but a handful of Eastern Sierra visitors. It is an easily accessible location that does not involve a scary, butt-clenching drive on the brink of a thousand-foot drop into the abyss.…
On Saturday, October 14 of 1066. The English and Normans fought a historical battle in Anglo-Saxon England, on a site said to have been known as the "Grey Apple Tree" or nowadays known simply as "Battle". The English used axes as their weapons and crossed together shields to protect themselves, creating a shield wall, which had become a traditional way of fighting. The Normans lined up in three rows. First the archers, then the infantry, and next the mounted knights.…

Timber Frame construction is a method of building that relies on a timber frame as a basic means of structural support. The majority of structural timber used in Ireland comes from managed forests and is a renewable and sustainable material. The growing of timber benefits the environment, and its harvesting, production and transport are seen to produce less CO2 than other construction materials such as concrete and steel. The environmental…
Gaboon Ebony, also known as "Gaboon" or "black" Ebony sets the undisputed standard for true black wood around the globe and has done so throughout history. Highly prized throughout many civilizations as the purest of all black wood, it has been found in the most coveted places within Egyptian tombs. Other documented fondness by royalty shows it to have been the choice material for scepters and drinking cups by the ancient kings of India.…

In 1348, the Bubonic Plague swept through western Europe’s hemisphere taking out thirty to fifty percent of the total population. The Black Death set the stage for more modern medicine and spurred changes in public health and hospital management. The plague sent physicians scrambling to develop treatments and find causes. The Black Death also helped shift medicine toward greater emphasis on practice than there had been before. Lastly, it helped blend old and new practices of medicine in the Middle Ages. The Bubonic plague was a disease that not only held society, economy and medicine back in the Middle ages by causing lack of doctors and scientist; but it also pushed forward and opened pandoras box to research and treatment for disease.…
Throughout time the process of building has sparked many ideas. Although some of the ideas end in failure, a few go on to be successful. But when people see a building or a nice piece of furniture, they look at what it is made of. While the thing that holds it together is overlooked, which would be the nail. When thinking of nails it is not often that the history of nails comes to mind, from the size to the evolution of nails throughout time, although without them the process of building would be totally different.…

I been living in the Redwood National and State Parks for my whole life, and I’m going to stay here for the rest of it too, but it’s not been boring at all. I’m the highest redwood tree in the forest, standing 379.7 feet tall. I have big, thick branches with abundant leaves at the end, and I am one of the most visited trees in the forest because of my impressive height. I remember that when I was growing up, I could see more people come and visit the park than what I see this day. This may not be a problem now, but it may lead to a big problem because if fewer people keep coming, fewer people will take care of nature, which that may lead into many bigger problems.…
Redwoods get their common name from their bark and heartwood, the reddish-brown color of which stems from high tannin levels. Other chemicals found in the leaves, branches and bark give these trees a remarkable resistance to fungal disease and insect infestation. Their thick bark holds large quantities of water, which protects them from periodic, naturally occurring fires.…
From the Colonial area up until the National period, wood served as a dual purpose resource that provided both as a building material and a source of fuel. The United States had access to iron to build structures, but it was far too expensive compared to wood and required additional handling knowledge (Hughes, 301). Rural areas in the United States required fuel that was virtually free of cost, and wood was readily available…
