IS IT PATRIOTIC TO PROTEST ONES GOVERNMENT?
“Protest beyond the law is not a departure from democracy; it is absolutely essential to it. ”

Howard Zinn
According to Howard Zinn, a writer and social activist, “Protest beyond the law is not a departure from democracy; it is absolutely essential to it.” When considering whether it is patriotic to protest ones government, one only needs to consider Zinn’s comment. It is not only patriotic to protest ones government, in the United States, it is essential to maintaining democracy.
NOTE: I would then go on to discuss 3 times that this protest was important: Thoreau, King, and a current example.

DOES EVERYONE HAVE A DARK SIDE?
“We all need to look into the dark side of our nature that's where the energy is, the passion. People are afraid of that because it holds pieces of us we're busy denying.” Sue Grafton quotes
According to writer Sue Grafton, “We all need to look into the dark side of our nature - that’s where the energy is, the passion. People are afraid of that because it holds pieces of us we’re busy denying.” Because it is called the “dark side,” there is a negative connotation that makes people think it is bad. It is not necessarily bad; it may just be that repressed part of our personality within which lie our passions. Not only does everyone have a dark side; everyone needs to explore that dark side.

NOTE: I would then go on to explore the dark side of 3 different people (and be sure to discuss why these dark sides impress or fascinate us): Usher,
Masque, Modern other.
OR
I might talk about 3 writers who focus on the dark side of individuals:

Poe, Hawthorne, Stephen King (or other contemporary author)

All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them. ”
Galileo Galilei quotes

Philosopher, astonomer, and mathemetician Galileo Galilei once said, “All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point

The key to avoid becoming a dark sider is to control your emotions, like a good political leader should. Control the power, don't let the power control you.You can, basically, replace the force with any "tool" you want. A gun is not evil. If you use a gun to kill Hitler, you're the good guy, if you use it to rob a bank you're evil. Shapiro then continues…

    1. In the essay Lost in the Kitchen, the author Barry uses various stereotypes to degrade both men and women. The first stereotype that Barry uses is when he writes, “I would no more enter the kitchen than I would attempt to park a nuclear aircraft carrier, but my wife, glides in very casually and picks up exactly the right kitchen implement, and starts doing exactly the right thing without receiving any instructions whatsoever.” In that one quote, Barry is using the stereotype that women are like professionals, and can do near anything inside of a kitchen. The type of stereotype that Barry used to describe his wife dates back to the early twentieth century, when a woman’s main job was to just cook and clean. Barry also degrades men by using the stereotype that man are completely incompetent in the kitchen when he writes, “the man , feeling guilty, finally shuffles in and offers to help. So the woman says something like “Well you can cut the turnips.” … It is the absolute simplest thing that she can think of. But the man… this instruction raises many troubling questions.” This stereotype describing a man shows how insufficient a man is in a kitchen, even when it comes to the simplest of things, such as cutting a turnip.…

In today 's economic environment, intangible assets are becoming increasingly important. These assets which are the result of human intellectual creative activity such as artistic creation, know-how, design, and invention are known as "intellectual property." “Among the forms of intellectual property specifically entitled to legal protection are inventions, trademarks, designs, literary works, layout-designs of integrated circuits and trade secrets. As the volume of trade in goods and services involving intellectual property has increased greatly in recent years, the importance of the protection of intellectual property for the world economy has grown enormously. Inappropriate and insufficient protection of intellectual property can distort free trade.” (Veseth and Uchitelle, 2002)…

The following essay will attempt to evaluate the approach taken by Dworkin and Habermas on their views of civil disobedience. The two main pieces of literature referred to will be Dworkin 's paper on ‘Civil Disobedience and Nuclear Protest '# and Habermas 's paper on ‘Civil Disobedience: Litmus Test for the Democratic Constitutional State. '# An outline of both Dworkin 's and Habermas 's approach will be given , further discussion will then focus on a reflective evaluation of these approaches. Firstly though, it is worth commenting on civil disobedience in a more general context. Most would agree that civil disobedience is a ‘vital and protected form of political communication in modern constitutional democracies '# and further the 'civil disobedience has a legitimate if informal place in the political culture of the community. '# Civil disobedience can basically be broken down into two methods, either intentionally violating the law and thus incurring arrest (persuasive), or using the power of the masses to make prosecution too costly to pursue (non persuasive).…
