The fast food industry all over the world has grown dramatically during the last few years, and apparently people in the U.S. spend more money on fast food than in daily life groceries. It seems so wrong to change homemade food for things like pre-elaborated patties, frozen fries and soda but there is so much more than the obvious high calories and low nutrients contents in these foods, there had been several scandals of all kinds regarding the hygiene and the quality of the products that many fast food chains offer. In 1993 the worldwide famous fast food chain: McDonald’s stated and assured that their fries and hash browns were vegetarian, fried in 100% vegetable oil, but it was in 2001 that the truth was finally out and McDonald’s declared that they fries indeed contained beef. These kinds of scandals happen more often than we think, we sometimes hear rumors about these scandals, but we usually don’t dig into it and just let it go. Most fast food companies are powerful enough to calm down the public and keep going strong in the business. Thankfully there are still some fast food chains scandals that won’t be forgotten and forgiven so easily, maybe we should start to have them in mind before stepping into any of the stores that will be mentioned in the further paragraphs.
McDonald’s, one of the oldest fast food restaurants in the world has been under the radar of not only the Food Associations of many countries but also under the radar of all their customers. Even under all this vigilance, they still come up with all kinds of tricks to fool the consumers and to lower the costs to their own convenience. One major scandals is the one previously mentioned, where McDonald’s stated that they fries and hash browns were vegetarian, when in fact they had beef in them. As meat consumers we probably don’t mind a tiny percentage of meat in our fries, but for vegetarians and Hindus this was completely unforgivable.
