She came in second at the national championship in 2003 at San Clemente, California against girls almost twice her age before the shark attack (Sandler 12). Some people need amputations because of all different types of reasons. Amputations are normally done on a person who is diabetic. In some other cases it could be because of an injury, or if they did not clean it properly. Cancer can also be another cause. Bethany was the only girl in the family. She had two older brothers. The entire family was surfers so it was like surfing ran in her blood. She first started surfing when she was just five years old, she got her first big win when she was eight years old. Bethany became famous because she was a great surfer and she suffered from a tragic accident with losing her arm. She still never gave up on her dream of becoming a great surfer (Sandler). They also made a movie about Bethany Hamilton called Soul Surfer (Ott). It brought attention to her disability because she wanted to be back out onto the water as soon as possible. She returned surfing the day before Thanksgiving in 2003. Later on after, that in 2005 she won the National Scholastic Surfing Association (Sandler).
Even though Bethany Hamilton is now an amputee she never gave up on her dream of becoming a champion surfer. The lesson people can learn from Bethany is never give up on your dreams. Do not let a disability get in your way. You should motivate yourself to become whatever you want to

Through her story of faith, persistence, and confidence, Bethany Hamilton has illustrated to millions how to strive for the seemingly unachievable. At the mere age of thirteen, Hamilton experienced something life changing: having an arm bitten off by a shark while surfing. Surfing had always meant the world to Bethany, in fact, her career as a surfer was primarily initiated because of her parents (Hamilton 7). From the moment Hamilton reaches the board, an inexplicable connection sparks. Bethany said “I’ve tried to explain why I feel the way I do and it's impossible. Only surfers get it: the rush, the addiction, the way it stirs your heart, plays with your head, and tortures your body (Hamilton 119) .” Although at times there were downsides, being the youngest of three and the only girl had its benefits. She always engaged in similar activities and the outcome was that she learned to be very ambitious and was always driven to be the…

    Bethany Hamilton Hero

Many people list heroes as brave, courageous, someone who saves the day. But heroes are everywhere. They could be friends, family or neighbors since anyone can be a hero. I believe that a hero would be Bethany Hamilton. She was born on the island of Kauai and practically raised on a surfboard, on the ocean water. She was a Christian child, a devoted surfer and was mostly influenced by her family and friends. One of her dreams was to become a professional surfer, and with her talent, it was her destiny. Her life was perfect until one day in October of 2003 when she went surfing with some friends. A shark ripped off a chunk of her board and her left arm, almost bleeds to death. Luckily, her friend was able to get the ambulance and stop some of her bleeding before she got to the hospital. When she woke up and saw she had no arm, she felt as if she were living a nightmare. She was only 13 years old and her dreams seemed as broken. But she would soon face the challenges of daily life without an arm, even do better than expected. Now, she is surfing in competitions again and is one of the best in the world. A hero to me is someone who does great things in a difficult situation. The one who never gives up even if you lost everything. They don’t always have to be the ones that save the day but one you look up to. Bravery, dedication and generosity are only a few characteristics that describe Bethany and are reasons why I think she is a hero.…

In some countries it is used as a war tactic or a a punishment. The thing with amputations is that the limb does not grow back. The only solution is, in some cases transplant but, more commonly a prosthetic. With every prosthetic comes its set of challenges but prosthetics were invented to ease those challenges.(amputations)…
