Best Day of My Life
Our lives are surprising. We can’t always predict what will happen to us, and what will have a profound impact on our future. Time is liquid, spilling between our fingers as we try to hold on to it. Significant moments of our own journey through the time we were given, mark us in a distinguished ways. Some scar us because of the traumatic events, inflicting pain and breaking our spirit. Other moments we hold on to dearly in our hearts and cherish, for the happiness they brought us. As humans we are more likely to remember the happy times.
It is difficult to pin point what day was exactly the happiest in my life. Was it the day I met my future husband? The day I married him? Or the day I became a mother? All of these were extremely happy events in my life, but I am convinced that if it wouldn’t be for the fact I agreed to marry the man of my dreams, I would have not experienced the joys of motherhood. For that reason I decided, that the happiest day of my life is my Wedding Day.
I always was attracted to brunets with brown eyes, so I thought one day I will end up marrying one.I met Pavel at my girlfriend’s birthday party. He was tall with blonde hair and eyes like two blue oceans. The moment I saw him, I felt myself drowning in them. He was confident and had really nice hands, clean with well-trimmed fingernails. I don’t know why, but this feature stood out.
Pavel was friendly and his voice was low and at ease, comforting. We spent the rest of the party in each other’s company, talking. We found out we both loved outdoor activities, especially skiing and snowboarding. I was a little nervous that night, as I was having a strange feeling that I couldn’t explain. However I enjoyed his company and was glad I met such a fine man. He asked me out on a date that evening. And so we started going out and soon exclusively became a couple. We had mutual interests like; cycling, fishing, snowboarding and cooking. Oh, how we loved cooking together! He was the only man,

Journalism doesn't really allow for such detail and nuance, and what I felt seems to escape words. Reporting the facts alone doesn't do it justice. His lips were warm and somehow... knowledgable of me, and I didn't care that his expertise was probably due to the dozens of girls he had seduced before. No, I had no illusions that he was mine alone but it didn't matter. I think I understood Free Love then, and sharing, and how it made so much more sense to just give in to whoever was willing and just enjoy that experience without attaching an eternity of matrimony to it. Darning his socks and cooking a wholesome dinner for him were the farthest things from my mind. He held me there and even though I had never kissed a man before, I knew just what to do; he was so patient with me, it made me wonder if he knew it was me and not Joyce and he just didn't…

As many of us develop, we may be able to identify those moments when some experience altered our development, or enabled us to view our environment in a different light. These experiences may have been critical in our lives, and have possibly shaped the type of adults we are now, and how we may be in the future. Personally, the experience that molded me into the adult that I am today was a negative experience. It was an experience that was spawned out of jealousy, hatred, rage, and sadness. As I reflect upon this life changing moment, I can’t help but feel as though I am transported back in time as that fearful, timid child dealing with the sorrows of others, and coping with the pain they bestowed upon me.…

Life is a scary and thrilling rollercoaster full of ups and downs, twists, and turns, and tears and fears. Some things can make you scream with joy and pride while other things torrent upon your heart to tear you apart. Life is one of the things many people take for granted instead of living it like there is no tomorrow. Every day, every hour, every minute, and down to every second is precious; because once time rolls on, the moment is gone forever. It will only be a part of history you cannot change. While most opportunities are there every day, there are some that only come once in a lifetime.…

Dmitri Gurov has a wife, a daughter, and two sons. He doesn’t love his wife at all and he never liked being at home. Gurov was always having affairs with other women. He thought of women as being “the lower race”, but yet he found himself more comfortable with women then being with men. One day he saw a lady, Anna, walking with her dog at Yalta. He had never seen her before and was intrigued by her. One evening he was out dinning by himself and Anna sat at the table next to him. He took the opportunity to pet her dog in hopes of starting a conversation with her. It worked. That night he lay in his bed and said, “There’s something pathetic about her, anyway” (184). Gurov said this in the time where he thought he was every woman’s fantasy. He thought he played the romantic love that every woman dreamt of. After that night they continued to see each other.…

The first example of love we are presented with is displayed through a traditional romantic gestures; the holding of hands, song, passion and emotion. We are, however, very aware of the less than traditional backdrop of a demonstration. Kundera combines these familiar actions within what would have been a contemporary situation. However, we are dubious about the sincerity of their love by the end of Helena’s monologue. Pavel accuses their marriage being founded on ‘Party Discipline’ (p.13. The Joke), rather than love. Given the circumstances of their first encounter this could be seen as a valid point. As well as the fact that we are told that she no longer loves him, at least 7 years after their initial meeting. One wonders whether her love for him was genuine, or for a period of her life. She equates Pavel with her ‘youth, Prague, The University, the dormitory and most of all the Fucik Song and Dance Ensemble’. She projects her history onto Pavel, and we are left to decide whether her love was of a true nature, or of the feeling and identity being a member of the party and university (and more importantly, youth). More emotion is directed to the atmosphere of being alive in that era than Pavel.…
