In Anton Chekov’s “The Lady with the Dog”, Chekov uses direct language along with slight descriptions to dictate the setting. However, the main purpose for the settings of Yalta and Moscow are to influence Gurov’s motives and feelings. The atmosphere that Gurov is open to is infectious. The locations of Yalta and Moscow represent two different ideologies in Gurov’s life. Yalta expands on the mischievousness and romantic aspects of Gurov while in Moscow the boring and mundane life of Gurov is exhibited. The location called S. is brief, but also entails a rebellious attitude. The plot overall is pushed forward by the chronological change in venue.…

Marya eventually meets and falls in love with Nikolai. At a key moment in their relationship, Marya perceives his inner struggles and directly addresses them. Doing so jolts Nikolai out of his cynical stupor, and “For a few seconds they looked silently into each other’s eyes, and the distant and impossible suddenly became near, possible, and inevitable” (1144). In all of this, we see how Tolstoy develops Marya into a strong and capable woman. Her relationship to her father, does not define her development as a woman and as her own person.…

The author used description to reveal a general picture about Gurov. Referring women as "the inferior race" but "he could not have lived without "the inferior rate"" (Yarmolinsky, 776) either. Women are essential to his life but it is wonder that he has ever loved any of them. These details suggest that he might not be a suitable man for marriage. As mentioned, Gurov was a dynamic character; indeed, his change was a major fact for the story. Gurov's feeling toward Anna changed before and after she left. Although not many descriptions depicted how he felt about the relationship, a very important detail reveals his thinking. " Gurov cut himself a slice and began eating it without haste" while Anna was so anxious. In this, the characters' gesture or attitude enabled the readers to learn about them. Gurov was so "cold" and neglectful toward Anna and thus to him she was not different from the other women he had met. However, his feeling started changing when he got back to Moscow. Using description and dialogue the author reveal the change in Gurov. "And only from time to time he would dream of her with her touching smile as he dreamed of others" (Yarmolinsky, 782). The way the author described Gurov show the readers how deep he was fascinated about Anna; "Already he was tormented by a strong desire to share his memories with…

Anton Chekhov begins the story with a description of Dmitri Gurov's home life. Chekhov writes, "and though he secretly considered her shallow, narrow-minded, and dowdy, he stood in awe of her, and disliked being at home. He had begun deceiving her long ago and he was now constantly unfaithful to her." This passage portrays Gurov's unhappiness with his life. He had been pressured into marrying his wife in only his third year of college and now was suffering the consequences of making a life-long commitment too early. This dissatisfaction, therefore, leads him to cheat on his wife.…

When first coming into contact with her, Gurov notices that she is walking a dog. The kind of dog that she is walking, a white Pomeranian, symbolizes Anna’s innocence. She is a married woman, alone on vacation while her husband is back at home sick. It is evident that there was something special about Anna that drew in Gurov because the story says, “a romance with an unknown woman… suddenly took possession of him.” Although, shortly after having sexual intercourse with Anna Gurov “felt bored already… He was irritated by the naïve…

Dimitri Dmitritch Gurov is Anton Chekhov’s main character in “The Lady with the Dog.” Chekhov goes to great lengths unfolding Gurov’s change in character from an experienced and emotionless playboy to a hopeless romantic. When he meets Anna, the lady with the dog, he is doing so with selfish intentions. In time, Anna turns Gurov from a man of meaningless hookups to a man searching for his first true love, someone who ultimately ends up being enchanted by the innocent romanticism of his young lady friend.…

In the story "The Lady with the Dog" by Chekhov is an obvious love story from the very beginning. It is known that Dmitry is a womanizer but when he first lays his eyes on Anna you can almost feel the smirk on his face of surprised happiness. It was just something a little different that he has never felt before, even though he tries to be somewhat arrogant about it. The story is very emotional and it brings a loveless, stiff marriage on both ends to life. This is nothing special, a loveless marriage seeing as lifeless marriages were very common during this time. The parents of the potential mates usually arraigned marriages and it is made out to be more of a business deal than a loving union between two people. If marriage were not put together as a business deal than it was more of just being the right thing to do. You had to be married eventually or you were looked upon as an outcast. A marriage could also put you into a higher social position weather it is for the man or the woman. As sad as it was these two people were in marriages where they ultimately had to tell themselves they loved each other when realistically they had learned to love one another. To me that is the whole point of the story. These two people had learned to love and have not actually fallen in love until now. These two people are for the first time finding themselves falling in love not with their significant other but with someone else (each other). That makes thing more complicated because it was not forced but natural so they could not deny or hide it this was happening weather they liked it or not. You know reading this story that what these two people are doing is morally wrong which is what Anna is dealing with pretty much throughout the whole affair. At the same time you were kind of disappointed that this couple (in some way that is what they became married or not) were separating and going their own ways back to the lives they want so desperately to get away from. There is almost…

In the novel Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, the Russian society in the late 19th century, particularly the nobility and aristocracy, is epitomized by their various social etiquettes and formalities that predominated the European continent during this time period. Perhaps the most intriguing theme perpetrated by Tolstoy during the entire novel is that of adultery and the moral and social contract a nobleman and noblewoman are bound to by the highly supercilious and elite aristocratic society. Adultery is committed by nearly every major character in the novel; including, of course, Anna herself, and the effects of this lewdly considered crime are evident in each of their marriages, families, and social relationships.…
