Authors of stories create vivid images by describing the setting. The mood and tone are heavily established in the setting of “The Lady With the Dog.” The setting changes a few times throughout the story. With each of these changes the mood and tone change along with it. From the romantic vibes of Yalta to the cold environment of Moscow, Anton Chekhov creates a setting that portrays the mood and tone throughout the entire story. “The Lady With the Dog” begins in the city of Yalta. Yalta is a Russian resort city on the Black Sea. The resort feel of the city gives the two main characters an opportunity to meet. The setting does not allow the meeting of the Dmitri and Anna to simply be casual. They were both alone in the passionate city of Yalta.

As soon as the setting is moved to Moscow, the tone and mood of the story changes. “At home in Moscow everything was in its winter routine; the stoves were heated, and in the morning it was still dark when the children were having breakfast and getting ready for school,” (Chekhov 171) Soon, each day starts to blend together. The cold and familiarness of the Moscow setting is perfect breeding ground for Dmitri’s loneliness to thrive. It sets the tone that he is becoming uncomfortable,and that he wants to do something about it. Dmitri ventures to the city of S- and ends up in the theater, watching a performance called “The Geisha.” “The theater was full. As in all provincial theaters, there was a fog above the chandelier, the gallery was noisy and restless;” (Chekhov 174). This setting was busy and dramatic. There is lots of people coming in, it’s hard to keep track of everyone. In this big theater the mood is mysterious, giving Dmitri an opportunity to get a moment alone with Anna.
