    Katherine Mansfield did a really good job at using theme through characterization. She first used Miss Brill’s attitude and appearance. Miss. Brill was a very classy old lady, “Miss Brill was glad that she had decided on her fur.” Back in the period that Miss Brill lived, it was very elegant to wear a type of fur around your neck, this usually symbolized wealth. The theme here would be acceptance, this connects to the world because there is always that one piece of clothing everyone wants or wears as a status symbol. The author also uses characterization through action or incident when Miss Brill is in her own world acting as if she is part of a play when two young people pull her back to reality. “ It’s her fu-ur which is so funny, “giggled the girl. “It’s exactly like a fried whiting.” This shocks Miss Brill because she has never experienced insult before, she’s always controlling what she wants to see and hear.     Spread spectrum technology was invented in the 1940s, and has been used extensively since then for military and other applications. Spread spectrum is a technique used in radio transmissions whereby a transmitted signal is spread over or occupies a wide frequency band. In the case of radio transmission, the signal spreads over a much larger part of the Radio Frequency spectrum that is much wider than the minimum bandwidth required for transmitting the information being sent. This makes the signal more robust against interference and jamming. During the process of this technique the narrowband signal is manipulated (scrambled) prior to transmission. The manipulation requires a pseudo random noise. Pseudo random noise is similar to noise and although it seems to lack any definite pattern, pseudo random noise consists of a deterministic sequence of pulses that will repeat itself after its period. Pseudo random noise code is basically a method of transmitting messages in the presence of interference or noise. Spread spectrum communications cannot be said to be an efficient means of utilizing bandwidth. However, it does come into its own when combined with existing systems occupying the frequency.…

This prompts her father to label her a phony, which she detests more than the beatings she receives for lying. She tries to stay out of trouble at school, but when she announces her doubts about the existence of heaven and hell, Sister Virgil and Father Nunez suggest that perhaps she should not be educated in a Catholic school.Beka continues to learn and grow with each of life’s lessons but Toycie’s tragedy is the most impacting lesson of all. Toycie’s death not only strengthens her resolve to “never fall in love” but it also convinces her she must complete her education. Beka learns to channel her passion and intelligence and becomes a mature woman who can correct her mistakes. She blossoms into a self-confidant young woman who is not even afraid to slip into her Creole dialect to make a point to Sister Gabriela while her mother smiles approvingly. Beka learns that she controls her destiny and with hard work, she will not be condemned to a life like that of the Coolie prostitute, National Vellor, who tells Beka, “No mother, no father, no school. What could I do?”…
