Beowulf was written by an unknown Anglo Saxon poet from 700 A.D. and has been passed on ever since then. The story has been said to have taken place in 500 A.D. It is about a Kingdom called Denmark ruled by King Hrothgar whom is said to be a good ruler. The kingdom has been cursed for hundreds of years by a monster named Grendel. Every time the people of Denmark gathered in the hall of the kingdom Grendel would hear the music of god and it would hurt his ears because he was a Son of Cain. Then one day Beowulf King of Geats, comes to the Danish Shore and without fear stands up to guard and boasts about himself and explains to the guard that he is there to defeat the monster that has cursed the land. There are two different stories to the tale…

Beowulf’s loyalty is one of the reasons that he is considered a hero. When Beowulf returns to Geatland after defeating Grendel and his mother, he immediately offers many of his gifts to Hygelac and Hygd, the king and queen of his homeland. He could have kept all the gifts for himself and lived as a very rich man, but his loyalty causes him to offer those gifts up to his king and queen. Beowulf also shows his loyalty to his father by his help to the Danes in the first place. Beowulf knows that the Danes helped his father at a point where he most needed it, and so he felt that he should take on that indebtedness from his father to help the Danish people with Grendel.…

In the opening of Beowulf, a difference is seen between two characters, Hrothgar's warriors and Grendel. Hrothgar's warriors are loyal to their leader and are vow to fight boldly to the death for Hrothgar. Grendel is a demon descended from the biblical Cain, the oldest son of Adam and Eve who killed his brother Abel. That difference is sound. The speaker uses sound to describe the disparity of the two characters: "A powerful monster, living down / In the darkness, growled in pain, impatient / As day after day the music rang / Loud in that hall, the harp's rejoicing / Call and the poet's clear songs" (1-5). Grendel is annoyed with the music and the poetry; so he growl in pain impatiently. The growling is a communication tool that is primitive and is also a disorganized sound.…

    J. R. R. Tolkein’s criticism “Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics”, focuses on his thoughts and views over the well known Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, and the appalling criticism directed towards it. Tolkein’s evaluation declares that Beowulf should not be judged as a work of historical literature, but instead as a work of fine art. Tolkein develops his belief by recognizing that the poem does contain some historical significance as well as some historically correct content, but was mostly created for the purpose of poetry and not the facts revolving around the Anglo-Saxons. Moving along, Tolkein begins making his points by displaying the various critiques about Beowulf , including why he believes they are poor and incorrect judgements, and finally continues by explaining and supporting his…

The epic of Beowulf reveals three monster archetypes, each one relates to an internal struggle Beowulf is facing. His battles between each monster eventually lead to his victory over each inner demon he is dealing with. Beowulf portrays this when he successfully defeats Grendel’s Mother “The water was calm and clean, the whole/ Huge lake was peaceful once the demons who’d lived/ in it/ Were dead.../They left the lake together.../Behind them the water slowly thickened/ As the monsters’ blood came seeping up”(ll. 1620-1631). As Beowulf walks away he assumes the battle is over, but the water begins to slowly thicken. This symbolizes how Beowulf is still struggling with his internal demons even though the initial victory against Grendel’s mother was won. This gives insight into how each battle plays a role into Beowulf’s internal struggle, as he soon discovers in order to overcome each demon he must first defeat the monster that represents this struggle.…
