Why is Star War such a global phenomenon? What about Matrix, Lord of the Ring? The key to their success is the structure of the story: they all applied Hero’s Journey, introduced by Joseph Campbell in 1949. The sense of this structure actually existed long before Joseph Campbell. Stories like Beowulf were the ancestors with such bloodline. Though the structure evolved differently as time pasts, the essence of it never vanishes. Genuinely, a Hero’s Journey contains three main sections: departure, redemption, and return. The referenced TED talk is pretty interesting: it gives a close analysis over stories from contemporary people in relation to their own journeys to help the audience narrow the concept of the structure down to a more acceptable scale.…
One of the four qualifications of an epic hero is strength. “But the truth is simple: no man swims in the sea as I can, no strength is a match for mine.” (Page: 40, line: 532- 534, Chapter 8) Beowulf, when taunted by Unferth, tells of the swimming contest against Brecca. He explains that his defeat was caused by sea monsters which he fought off and cleaned the sea. He is determined he could beat Brecca in a rematch. In addition, Beowulf becomes vain when discussing his future battle against the monster Grendel. “Grendel is no braver, no stronger than I am! I could kill him with my sword; I shall not easy as it would be…His claws and teeth scratching at my shield, his clumsy fists beating at my sword blade, would be helpless.” (Page: 44, line: 677- 687, Chapter 10). In his battle against Grendel, he defeats the monster with his powerful grip, ripping Grendel’s arm off. Beowulf proves he has the strength of any mighty hero before his time.…
Beowulf is an old English poem of heroism, and is noted as the most important piece of literature of that time period. The poem itself consists of over 3000 lines and was composed around the seventh century. The tale is of a heroic warrior that finds himself faced with danger several times during his life. The poem is very suspenseful, in that there are kings, dragons and demons that battle each other for power. During different parts of the poem, you are left to wonder, what is going to happen? Who is to be the victor in the battle? Will Beowulf become a legendary hero? The answer is, yes. Beowulf will be the victor, and along the way, prove what it means to be courageous, have strength, and most important of all, selflessly protect those around him.…
Throughout the epic, Beowulf demonstrated his strength as a warrior and a leader. When Grendel arrived at Herot, the other warriors “could not scratch at his skin, for that sin-stained demon had bewitched all men's weapons, laid spells that blunted every mortal man's blade.”(92-94). Beowulf took charge and used his own hands to fight and eventually defeat Grendel since his fellow men could not do so. This conveys how Beowulf was not only physically strong in battle, but how he took charge to defeat Grendel since the others were unable to. Beowulf also took it upon himself to battle Grendel's mother, which was where he utilized “the best of all weapons / But so massive that no ordinary man could lift / Its carved and decorated length. He drew it.”(244-246). Since a normal man would have been unable to life the sword, this event in the text displays how Beowulf is an epic hero. An epic hero is often characterized by possessing an immense amount of strength, which Beowulf had from being able to utilize the sword and defeat Grendel's mother. His strength as a warrior and a leader is what classifies Beowulf as a quintessential epic…
The strength of Beowulf is portrayed by his superhuman capabilities as he defeats monsters that are beyond human strength. He also requires superhuman abilities to bring them down. The monster of Denmark, Grendel, had a spell casted upon him that didn’t allow any soldier’s sword to harm him. Beowulf however, tore Grendel’s arm off with his bare hands and caused the savage beast to bleed out and die.…
Beowulf exercises violence for the glory and treasure of the king; his battle with Grendel is one of the most violent scene in the story. Beowulf does not carry any sort of weapon because he feels that doing so provides him with an unfair advantage over the unarmed Grendel. This shows Beowulf’s heroic nature. As all the warriors are asleep, Beowulf waits patiently. He pretends to sleep when Grendel enters the mead-hall. After Grendel devours some of the warriors, he makes a wrong move and goes for Beowulf. As soon as Beowulf grips Grendel’s hand, Grendel realizes the great strength of the opponent. Beowulf does not let go of his deadly grip until victory is his. According to Tokine’s description of the situation, “A grievous hurt of body that…
Which is better? To be a king or to be a hero? To those who are deeply infatuated with the feeling of complete power and authority, the correct answer is a king. To those who get a thrill from being responsible for the wellbeing of others; or to those who are fascinated by the thought of being a legend and their name going down in history, the correct answer is a hero. Beowulf chose to become the latter of the two previous choices, despite what the population wanted. Beowulf cared more for the heroic image and respect, rather than the initial wealth and status that comes with being a king.…
In Beowulf one of the main characters Grendel is a vicious monster who feasts on the flesh and blood of anyone who stands in his way. He is considered to be the toughest opponent of Hrothgar and his men. When Beowulf is called to face Grendel, he does not seem fazed by the challenge despite all the stories told about Grendel and his merciless ways. In fact, Beowulf decides it would only be fair if he were to fight Grendel with no weapons, since Grendel uses his bare hands to kill. The lines from this story “ He murders as he likes, with no mercy, gorges and feasts on your flesh, and expects no trouble…” (lines 332-334) perfectly describes Grendel’s ruthless ways as well as Beowulf’s courage.…
Beowulf is a very courageous character and recounts his acts of courage to every person who will listen. In the poem Beowulf tells of his previous courageous actions in destroying a tribe of giants, defeating sea monsters in the night and returning from battle covered in his enemies blood. Beowulf has come to King Hrothgar to fight an ogre. A monster that has brought misery and death to the Danes for many years. This ogre, Grendel, killed thirty of Hrothgar’s men and caused the great mead hall of Herot to be closed. Beowulf tells King Hrothgar “the monster’s scorn of men Is so great that he needs no weapons and fears none. Nor will I” (lines 262-264) Therefore Beowulf intends to fight the Grendel without his armor or his sword. Beowulf may be so courageous because he believes so strongly in fate shaping his successes in the past. Beowulf believes that if it is his fate to win against Grendel then he will win. If it is his fate to die…
The first battle Beowulf is faced with is against Grendel. Grendel decides to attack because he is jealous and hates the joy and happiness he hears from the mead-hall; he decides to attack out of jealousy and annoyance. Beowulf decides to fight Grendel to not only gain glory for himself and to create himself a good reputation, but also to serve as assistance to the people of Herot. At the time of this battle, Beowulf was youthful and proud; he bragged on how he would be able to defeat Grendel and save the people. Beowulf chose to fight Grendel without any weapons in order to be on the same “playing field” as Grendel who was also weaponless. Beowulf asks the king to fight alone, with the help of his men only. He stays awake, awaiting the…
By defeating Grendel, a monster who has never been defeated, Beowulf would add to his legacy. To further his reputation, Beowulf decides to not use weapons or armor because Grendel “has no ideas of the arts of war, of shield or sword-play, though he does possess a wild strength” (Heany 16). Beowulf wants to make sure that his reputation is unquestionable because he does not want people to think that the only reason he defeated Grendel was due to his weapons. Since Grendel “has no ideas of the arts of war...though...possess a wild strength”, Beowulf wants to prove that he is equal if not better in strength than Grendel. In reality, it would make sense to use weapons and armor to fight Grendel. However, Beowulf believes that fighting weaponless would make his legacy greater. Beowulf’s archetypal trait of desire for a lasting legacy can be seen through his pride in not using weapons or…

"A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself" -Joseph Campbell. The story I'm writing about is the Epic poem call Beowulf, which was translated by Burton Raftel. Beowulf is a hero who defeated many monster that are killing innocent people. In his life, as a hero, Beowulf shows that he is bossy, independent, and fearless; which are all the qualities of a real Epic hero.…
Who is your favorite superhero? There are many heroes around us and some we may not know. The very first hero is Beowulf he was a hero to his people and done many good. He was the one who started doing well.…
An epic hero is a man of extraordinary strength, distinguished courage, and talent admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. I believe heroes should hold many qualities upon themselves such as sacrifice, focus, bravery, courage, determination, and loyalty. A hero, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act, and is regarded as a model or ideal. Beowulf is a character of a legendary epic hero. He becomes a leader of his people, which is destined to face the source of danger.he is willing to risk his life for the greater good, his people. He is also willing to face his fears, and meet them head on. Beowulf makes difficult/ hard decisions, even when the outcome is bad. And Beowulf demonstrates in many ways all the characteristics and qualities of being a true hero.…
