The poem begins with a feast that was held at the Herot Hall. Hrotghar was a good king and he wanted to celebrate with his people his reign by building a new hall. But such celebration did not only bring Hrotghar people to the feast, but also the attention of a horrible monster known as Grendel. It is a beast that lives in the darkness all his life and dislikes the light; as well as the people of the light. Grendel main focus was to eliminate them all. The night was around the corner to bring horror into the kingdom. It was the perfect time for Grendel to come and attack the creatures of the light while everyone was having a good time at the palace. As the morning arises, Hrothgar discover the bloodshed and mourn that his kingdom had. He was under attack and he needed it to find protection not only for him but also for his people.
Grendel was at war with the Danes and as time went by news got around. The Geats receive news of the massacres that Grendel has committed and Beowulf decides to help out. When Beowulf and his men arrive to Denmark he presents himself not with his name but with his father’s name. “We belong by birth to the Geat people and owe allegiance to Lord Hygelac. In his day, my father was famous man, a noble warrior-Lord named Ecgtheow. He outlasted many a long winter and went on his way. All over the world men wise in counsel continue to remember him.” Beowulf narrates how great his father was and he was his own descendant. Not only did he mention his greatness but also that he was a strong man. By emphasizing that his father had survive many winters. How would many winters describe that a person had strength? During those times, the way people counted time was by how many winters they had survive in their lifetime. There were no types of medicines or medical attention during those times so if someone had the flu or a small cold they were most likely distend to die. Someone that had survived many winters would be consider a strong person, because they face the death and still manage to survive.
What a better way to introduce himself with a great hero. Parents and Grandparents were the people that imply values to their family and kids. Most man would introduce themselves not with their name but with their Father’s name or Grandfather’s name. The reason why they did this was because of identity. Their identity would come from their parents or ancestors and it was very important to everyone to have a respectful identity.
Hrothgar remembers Beowulf father, he had once help him settle a dispute and now it was time for Beowulf to finish paying the rest of his service. It was Beowulf responsibility to help out Hrothgar. As Hrothgar had once help his father out and even though Beowulf father already “went on his way,” or in other words past away. It was Beowulf will to live up with his father’s legacy and word that he had gave to the king. Hrothgar was happy and decided to throw a feast at Herot Hall. To welcome Beowulf and the hope that had come to his kingdom, to destroy the darkness that had been killing his people. As the feast begins the queen Wealhtheow decides to give a toast for the welcoming of Beowulf. This symbolizes the sharing of goods; the women were in charge of the households goods. By the women sharing her goods symbolizes a moment of harmony and welcoming to their place. As the queen tells Beowulf, if he accomplish the death of Grendel he would have all the riches that he desires. Beowulf stood up and gave a speech, bragging about his strength and that he would become victorious from this battle.
As the night falls again over the kingdom Grendel decides to enter the castle and attack again. The guards were prepared for the visit of Grendel as well as Beowulf. Beowulf would face Grendel with “no weapons, therefore, for either-this night: unarmed he shall face me if face me dares. And may the divine Lord in his wisdom grant the glory of victory to whichever side he sees fit.”...
