Belief in Ghosts

Dear Kris:

Have you ever seen a ghost in your life?

Have you thought about whether ghosts may be actually live with us every day?

Do you think that the ghosts can be good characters or bad characters?

The world we live in is filled with miserable and mysterious events which happen everyday. One of the most interesting ones is ghosts, which have been often discussed, and have been believed in by many people since ancient times. Confucius said, "Respect ghosts and gods, but keep away from them." (Chinese Ghost Culture). Do you believe in them? I strongly believe ghosts exist in the world.

Although we are now living in a scientific era and most young people today do not actually believe that ghosts surround us, there are some experts getting together to investigate whether ghosts exist, much like with the existence of UFOs, which has also been discussed over the years.

Since my childhood, I have believed that ghosts exist in this world. However, my mother always said there was no such thing. They were just what people thought up for films or books. And I will explain why I believe that ghosts exist in our world.

To talk about ghosts, first of all we should determine what the exact definition of a ghost is. Dictionary.com defined a ghost as "the soul of a dead person, a disembodied spirit imagined, usually as a vague, shadowy or evanescent form, as wandering among or haunting living persons" (Dictionary), and in the end they might loiter surrounding us or haunting living people. Besides, another online source also mentioned that:

Ghosts are believed to have a surviving emotional memory typical of someone who has died violently, traumatically, and tragically. The soul of a ghost is not able to rest in peace and they remain in old and familiar places, repeating the same acts indefinitely until they are released from their endless haunting. (Tower of London Ghost).

In addition, stories about ghosts can be heard everywhere, especially through

To clarify what's out there to be investigated, Southall begins the handbook in earnest by defining the terms, since ghosts, spirits and poltergeists are not interchangeable and represent quite different phenomena.Ghosts and apparitions are a kind a recording on the environment - a residual energy that can come from a person, animal or even an inanimate object. We can experience these lingering energies by sight, sound, smell and touch. Spirits are what people most often think of as "ghosts." A spirit is the "actual sentient presence, or soul, of an individual or individuals who have remained in the material world after his or her physical body has died." Southall continues by describing different types of spirits and the reasons they may have stayed behind.…

Based on our reading of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” people of 1790 may have been more superstitious or more likely to believe in ghosts than people today because the people of 1790 had no scientific explanations to what was going on around them. So, they made up these ideas to give them an answer or explanation. Today we have technology and a lot of scientific research, so we can tell if something is fake or not real when these ideas come into our heads. In 1790, they also didn’t know that some of the noises they hear may be a trees or bushes in the wind. They lived in small towns and told stories to make up…

Also, reincarnation tends to support the sense of an afterlife because it shows that our souls can live on in another being once our physical body has died. There tends to be less evidence for this belief however, it does give people hope that there is something to believe in after death. Finally, psychics who can communicate with the dead show believers that people that have passed are still in a place where their souls can be happy. Ultimately, psychics show us that the souls of our loves ones can watch over us and can still be involved in our lives without us knowing. All of these claims however, have critics and skeptics that do not support them. Rachels in his essay “Do We Survive Death?” points out many of the criticisms for these arguments and tends to show the reader that he does not believe in an afterlife for the soul. I tended to listen to Rachels argument and take it into consideration however, I usually…

Ghosts are a significant part of a religion. It was mentioned and written in many parts of religious scriptures. The life after death was acknowledged in many of these scriptures. Nevertheless, it probably holds the logic behind paranormal activities. We acknowledge our existence because we believe we can see, touch, and feel ourselves. We tie in the existence of God as an extension of ours, without God we would not be here. As the Heaven and hell exist so we can separate the good from the bad.Ever imagine what it would feel if one of our darkest fears comes true. There are stories that are told around the world to scare us. It is up to each and every person who will hear it, if they would believe it or not. Based on the statistics on Wikipedia, ten of thousands of people from all nations around the world and all periods in human history reported encountering paranormal activities under more or less similar circumstances. Scientists who have witnessed and seen ghosts are believers, but universal belief is based on evidence, and even with photographic, video and audio evidence, many people aren't yet willing to universally accept that ghosts exists. As one who has seen them, I of course have no doubt, and it has caused me to rethink many things of a spiritual nature. There is a lot of evidence that tips the scale toward the existence of ghosts. By evidence, I mean that which cannot be explained by any other cause or scientific explanation. For an instance, exorcism and haunted houses or places happens to be phenomena’s that cannot be explained through scientific explanations.…
