Being An Outcast Research Paper
“With realization of one’s own potential and self-confidence in one’s ability, one can build a better world”- Dalai Lama. When I was growing up I was always quiet and shy. Every Time someone would talk to me I would try to get away from and get out of the conversation. I felt stupid every time I would try to say something to someone. I was always in the shadow or an outcast, someone that even recognized. I never tried to fit in, because I don’t want to make a fool out of myself.
As I got a little older I still felt the same way, however I opened up a little more when I moved to America. I made new friends even though i was shy; I didn't want them to make fun of me for being an outcast. Although I had all these new friends I still felt alone.

I am lucky enough to say that most of the time, I don’t really feel like an outsider. Usually, I can quickly adapt to new situations and easily relate to people. The one time that stands out in my mind of when I did feel like an outsider, is when I started high school. Like many others, the first day of high school was very nerve-wracking to me. I went to Castro Valley High School, which is a fairly large, public high school. The student body there numbers over three thousand.…

Growing up homeschooling, I wanted to break the typical homeschool stereotype kid. I had friends, I went to camps, and I joined many events. However, I had an introvert personality. And often times my friends neglected my existence because of my silence during their conversation; they went out with their classmates from school, leaving me unaccompanied and forgotten back in the corner. At camp, I ate my lunch alone, spent free time alone, and sat in the back alone. Not because I wanted to isolate myself from people, but the circle of people pushed me out the circle whenever I tried to join a crowd. I could not fit in.…

When looking at students on a college campus, it seems that the majority of them look the same. Conformity is one of the major factors that comes into play in the years after high school. According to Edmundson, students seem desperate to blend in and not make a spectacle of themselves. In a classroom, students generally prefer to work in groups because it is more comforting to work with other people in the same position as you; so in the event of being wrong or embarrassed, the blame is not solely your own. Working with other students all the time leads to a lack of one's self opinions. This type of conformity leads to the abolition of one's own ideas, thoughts, and beliefs. How does a student break out of the mold and begin to live their own life and be their own person?…

    Becoming An Outsider

Andy, I know I’m always reminded that whenever I go to a new branch I needed to get to know the team first, and observe everything and make a mental note of what’s working and what’s not before embarking on new challenges. I do believe in the phrase, though, ‘if it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it.’ It sounds like the new GM needed to fit in first before presenting her ‘wonderful’ plan. In addition, she lacked the important characteristics of ‘openness, candor, informality, and closure.’ It seemed as though, it was either her way or the highway.…

I grew up in a family that rarely, if ever, complimented me for my achievements. It impacted my self-image, and shattered my confidence to the point where I felt uncomfortable being around or speaking in front of others. I strongly believed that I am the way I am. That my ability was limited; that I was not as special as others kids. My grades in school and college were always average, B’s and C’s. I had no favorite subject, much less one that I was good at. I did have desire to try new things, I signed up to be a cheerleader in high school but I did not make the team, so I reverted back to being afraid to try anything in which I might fail.…

Growing up, I was unalike from other kids, I was "imaginative". During class, I would always by myself, writing bizarre stories with preposterous characters and with an unpredictable plot, while the other kids were playing with their friends. Many of my classmates would be entertained by loony stories, while other kids thought that I was just some lonely nitwit writing absurd stories to make up for not having any friends. In that year I was relocated to a different school, which I didn't want to go because I didn't have any friends at the school, I was currently attending and it would be much more difficult to make new friends. In the following year, I was still that shy girl in the back of the classroom not interacting with anybody, but it…

I realized that I should stop trying to be someone else, becoming apathetic to the athletic social norm that I thought was the only way to live just a year ago. Instead of being confined to conforming to what others did, I started to live life how I felt would be best for me. Engaging myself into new hobbies that I wouldn’t have before, I began to base my decisions on how I felt about it, cutting out how other people would do it. I learned that being yourself and having your own personality is a greater asset than trying to conform to the social norm. That in order to “fit in”, it’s much better to be who you…

Why fit in when you were born to stand out? Alice Walker’s poem Be Nobody’s Darling instills that in the head of her readers. The poem is saying to be yourself, to be happy with and within yourself. To love your flaws and embrace mistakes because that is what will shape you into who you truly meant to be. A line in the poem that really stood out to me was “Be pleased to walk alone (Uncool).” This line of the poem means be confident enough to stand out. Be happy to be different. In the poem Alice Walker uses the phrases “impetuous fools” to describe those who looked down upon outcasts. Do not let society change you. The line at the end of the poem “Qualified to live” means to live your life for you, because it is your life.…

People can be really shy in social situations and may find it difficult to reach beyond their comfort zones. It may be hard for people to do something as simple as speaking in front of large groups, or walking in a crowd. It may be essential for them to start small and build up the courage to confront their fears. Giving oral presentations in front of a small group, for instance, or walking through a crowd with someone they trust may help them gain experience, and eventually thrive in those social situations. More personally, conflicts can grow within smaller social groups or families. You might argue with a friend, or deal with a difficult family situation. These situations may be more difficult because it affects you on a personal level, even experiencing heartbreak. However, in the end, relationships grow and people become stronger than before.…
