It has been going on five years since unemployment has been such a factor in the United States. The unemployment rate is defined as the percentage of people in the economy willing and able to work but are not working. This statistic is a little deceiving, as it does not take into account the people who have given up looking for work. Given that caveat, experts believe that the number of people out of work is significantly higher. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports the unemployment rate on the first Friday of each month. It is useful to compare this month 's unemployment rate to that of the same month last year. This rules out the effects of seasonality (Amadeo, 2011). Unemployment is known as a lagging indicator. The effect of economic events, such as a recession, and so occur after the said economic event has already started. That means the unemployment rate will continue to rise even after the economy has started to recover, as employers are reluctant to lay people off when the economy turns bad. In turn, companies are even more reluctant to hire new workers until they are sure the economy is well into the expansion phase of the business cycle. For that reason, the unemployment rate is a powerful confirmation of what the other indicators are already showing. The current unemployment rate as of the end of January was 8.3% and…

In March 2011, NATO (with the UN authority) launched military action in Libya to end the 42-year Gaddafi dictatorship. The UN could not witness the massacre of civilians and not take any relevant action. The removal of Gaddafi took 7 months. It has been highlighted that if the International community were to intervene with Syria, they would face greater challenges both politically and militarily, than they did in Libya. It is suggested that there would be little chance of forming a national government if Assad was removed, as there is such a large divide amongst the Syrian population. Syria has also recently upgraded its defence capabilities and the security forces are much stronger; the Syrian Army is estimated at 325’000. If the International community were to…

The film Into The Wild directed by Sean Penn consists in the journey of a young guy called Chris McCandless, a 23 year old who shows us from his point of view just how manipulated society is, based on silly rules and behaviours where studying, getting a job and material things are a priority. Therefore Chris decided to escape from this society to live into the wild, surrounded by nature as is the place where he feels comfortable. Undoubtedly one of the main aims of the film is the contrast between society and nature. To achieve this, the director uses different techniques such as the setting the more important one, lighting, camera angles, sound effects among others, which also help us to the understanding of the characters linking us to their feelings and behaviours.…

Many humans today rely on personal care products in order to look good, and smell good. It is no longer just about being hygienic, but also a way to attract other people. Everyone has their favorite personal care product that they love using to make their hair shinier, or their lips redder, but do humans ever consider what ingredients are in these products that we depend on in our everyday lives? After doing some research, it was interesting to find how many of the products humans use in their day-to-day lives which contain ingredients that are linked to cancer, learning disabilities, and asthma. Some ingredients in products like lipstick include lead, tin oxide, iron oxide, and titanium oxide. Many more products include chemicals and ingredients that have unknown health risks. These products do not only affect humans, but they affect the environment when manufacturing, packaging, and distributing the products. Although humans are still currently very unaware of how these toxic ingredients can affect the environment, scientists know that the ingredients of these products seep through human skin, into our bodies, and into human excretions which are later introduced into the environment. Another way is that these ingredients also can get washed down the drain when people wash their bodies, their hair, or when washing makeup off their faces. A number of these personal care ingredients have been found in rivers and streams. The chemicals contaminate the water and affect the hormones in many organisms (Safe Cosmetics Action Network). If the ingredients in these products are harming humans, what must be their impact on the environment and wildlife? Although this question is still not very clear today, some cosmetic corporations such as Aveda have taken a huge step in trying to help the environment by incorporating corporate responsibility into the manufacturing of their products.…
