    1. After years of polite submission to her male counterparts, Janie gains her voice in Chapters 7 and 8. In what ways do these caricatures highlight a larger disrespect toward women? How do they show Janie’s increasing difficulty with the way men judge women?…

The difference between written language and conversational language in Japanese is much greater than in English. Japanese letters often use classical grammar patterns which are seldom used in conversation. Although there are no particular rules when writing to close friends, there are many set expressions and honorific expressions (keigo) used in formal letters. The PIO Tamils in South Africa have a long history. Although some research reveal that Indian Tamils had settled in South Africa many years ago, it’s only under the indentured system that a large number of Tamils arrived in South Africa. Tamil indentured workers were recruited to replace slave worker worldwide. Most of the indentured workers who went to South Africa were from South India. The first batch of Indian workers went in 1860 and good number of them decided to stay back in South Africa. Tamils contact with South Africa considerably predates the docking in Durban harbour of SS Truro, the steamship carrying 340 men, women and children who had embarked in Madras as labourers indentured to work on the sugar plantations of the British colony of Natal. In addition to the indentured workers a good number of Indian merchants also went as fee passengers. They were significant in numbers. They were affluent also. Unlike indentured workers who lost their contact with India, some of these merchants kept very close ties with their families in India. The major turning point between India and South Africa relations came when one of the Gujarati…

There is widespread evidence that greetings are an important part of the communicative competence necessary for being a member of any speech community. They are often one of the first verbal routines learned by children and certainly one of the first topics introduced in foreign language classes. They are also of great interest to analysts of social interaction, who see them as establishing the conditions for social encounters. It is not surprising, then, to find out that there is a considerable number of ethological, linguistic, sociological, and ethnographic studies of greetings. But despite the attention greetings have received in the social sciences, there is to date no generalized definition of greetings and therefore no systematic way for deciding what qualifies as greetings in a particular speech community. Nonetheless, researchers have felt at ease identifying “greetings” in different languages and providing hypotheses about what greetings “do” for or to people.…
