Basal Metabolic Rate of Body
Introduction: Basal Metabolic Rate has been defined as the minimum amount of energy needed by an animal to maintain the basic functions of survival (such as breathing). Several factors including age, gender, weight, and exercise affect the BMR. "BMR increases with increasing muscle tissue" therefore, exercising will enhance BMR while with increasing age, BMR is reduced (Scott, 2008). Also gender differences exist between males and females; it has been shown that males have higher BMRs than females. Several methods can be utilized to calculate the BMR. "Indirect calorimetr uses expired gases to calculate the amounts and types of fuel being utilized", while the less accurate methods include carious formulas (Kelly, 2013). Methods: For this lab, various human male and female weight, height, and age fake datas were used to determine/calculate BMR. Different formulas were used for males and females. The BMR formulas use S.I. units and therefore, the units obtained were converted. Excel was used to calculate the BMRs in kcal/day. Results: Attached on the back of this page Discussion: The BMR calculated for males and females were determined and it was shown that generally, females have less BMR values compared to males (Refer to Table I and II). " The female surface-related BMR values are approximately 10% below the male values through life” (Zubieta, 2002).On the other hand, the various categories affecting BMR were also evaluated by specific measurements of height, weight, and age for each gender. The data illustrates that with increasing height, the BMR increases as well (Graph 1). The mean height for males is higher than the mean height for females resulting in males having higher BMRs. The BMR also increases with increasing weight (Refer to Graph 2). However, with increasing age, the BMR decreases (refer to Table I and II). The height and weight measured should not be

In this study, two different methods of collecting maximal oxygen uptake scores were compared. The first being the predicted VO₂max score attained via the Rockport test and the second being indirect calorimetry VO₂max score attained through cycle ergometer and an attached metabolic cart. Ten males and nine females of similar ages participated in both the Rockport and Indirect Calorimetry tests. It was found that the Rockport predicted tests significantly overestimated the VO₂max scores for males by 14% and females by 16% possibly due to the variability the test is subjected to. The Indirect Calorimetry was therefore deemed the more accurate test. It was also discovered that there were significant individual differences in the data due to many differing factors, including sex, body composition, heredity and physical prowess.…

    The effect of exercise/physical activity on pulse, blood pressure, and respiration rate was tested on biology students. The results of the experiment showed that each of these parameters is affected after engaging in 2 minutes of physical activity. We found that average pulse, mean arterial pressure, and respiratory rate were all higher in males than in females. But, it was also found that women have a longer time to recovery for all these parameters. The reasons for higher pulse, MAP and blood pressure, and respiratory rate could be because on average men have an overall higher normal blood pressure than women. Also, I would assume that a reason women have a longer recovery time than men could be due to hormonal differences.     To predict caloric expenditure you can plug in a measured heart rate and calculate the predicted VO2 (L/min). Then using the predicted VO2 and an estimated thermal equivalent (4.825 kcal/LO2), you can estimate the caloric expenditure. Nonetheless, each individual’s heart rate varies. These can be attributed to gender differences, physical activity and physical training. So, if the person is of the same gender and is as healthy as you are and does the same amount of exercise then it could be possible to use their regression line to estimate your own caloric expenditure however the limitations would be possibly the difference in size of the lungs for the estimation of VO2 max. Weight would be important, as it is required to calculate the predicted caloric expenditure. However if your weight can be misleading because one can simply weigh more because they are taller, not because they are bigger. Height does not play such an important role. When you are taller, your body does need to pump more blood throughout the body. This means that they will pump more blood per beat but not that they would have a higher heart rate.
