BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

Oil is one of the most important resources that empower the economy. It is mainly used for transportation, cooking, heating, and also electricity generation. Without oil, transportation, manufacturing, and production of food may not be possible. Oil came from fossils and dead organisms that submerged to the bottom of the ocean, or what we so called Oil Wells. It was collected by oil rigs by digging the bottom surface of the ocean. Deepwater Horizon oil spill is one of the biggest and controversial oil spill in the world. In one of the President Barrack Obama’s interview, he stated that “the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced” (Horowitz). This oil spill affected and left significant damage to human, animals, and to the environment that will last not just years, but centuries, or maybe more.
“On 20 April 2010, the British Petroleum(BP) Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded off the coast of Louisiana, killing 11 workers (National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling 2011)” (Peres). This drilling rig have about 126 workers that time. This massive explosion happened at about ten at night wherein only the lights of the rig can be seen from a certain distance. It attracted the attention of the other boats, ships, and vessels miles away from the rig, and the people on board immediately
About two days after the explosion, the rig was still on fire. Experts suggest that the oil well kept releasing oil and kept the rig on fire. At this point, significant damage can be seen on the ocean surface as tons of oil keeps flowing out the well. “An estimate of about 5 million barrels (National Commission 2011) makes this accident the world’s largest accidental oil spill” (Migliaccio).
