Avid Speech

This was my first year of participating in the avid program, and to tell you the truth, I wasn't sure what to expect. However, I feel that with the help of Mr. Kaiser’s freshmen avid class, my first year of highschool will become one of my most memorable. From field trips, to tutorials, our class has been extremely interactive with one another. We have gone on a total of 3 field trips. One to Pacific Lutheran University, one to UW Tacoma, and one to Evergreen State College. Each trip has opened my eyes for possible future options. During each trip I learned of the college campus, the history, and the programs within the college. While learning these things, I had to ask insightful and specific questions. This really has

When I first arrived at high school, I was extremely nervous. The school was huge and there was not a familiar face in site. Although I was nervous, staff and students did their best to create a positive learning environment. Going into my sophomore year, I received the same positive energy from the staff and my peers. My guidance counselor, Ms. Hunter, helped me to prepare and offered me the opportunity to enroll in…

The Civil War, a war fought during the 1860s, decided a great many things: slavery or freedom, south and north or unification. In the beginning of the war, the Northern African Americans were not allowed to join the Union Army and fight against the Southern oppressors. Alfred M. Adora Svitak emphasized that learning between adults and kids should be reciprocal in her presentation which is ‘What Adults Can Learn From Kids?’. Although she accepted kids learn a lot of things from adults, she asserted that kids have a lot of things to share with adults. She proved that her presentation is realistic by real examples and pictures. According to several criteria, I liked this presentation. Although little girl has some deficiency, I admired her and her courage. There are three main criteria which are used when we evaluated presentations.…

Imagine yourself waking up every morning and realizing that you have to literally avoid death from the moment you wake up till the time you are supposedly safe at home. Imagine that you’re told by many people, who you love, that you’re a sin and that you will burn in hell. Imagine that everyday the people you thought cared for you turn you away and threaten you if you don't change, for some people that is something they can never even begin to understand, but now imagine it happening to someone for their entire life. Laverne Cox, a transgender woman and actress, gives a powerful speech during ‘Creating Change 2014’ (an organization that brings awareness to the LGBT community) she talks about the violent injustices and police discrimination against the lives of transgender women of color as a way to spread awareness of the inequalities of transgender within the LGBT community to those who feel the T in LGBT isn't as important. Throughout her speech she appeals to the viewer's empathy to those in pain through personal anecdotes and asyndeton sentences.…

Not only in my UCOL class have I learned more about how to accomplish things in college, I have also learned a lot from my communication professor. I had an interview with her on choosing a major, how to do better in college and on how to figure out where you want to be and what you want to be. Also the friends I have met have helped me realize what I really want to be doing in my four years of college and where I should go to do it. One person who has helped me the absolute most would have to be my teacher assistant for UCOL, she from the first day has went out of her way to help me. She still helps me constantly with problems I have at school. I am very lucky to have so many people to encourage and push me to do…

In David McCullough’s June 2012 Commencement Speech You Are Not Special, he argues that no one is really special. In this speech he is saying that everyone is alike somewhere and somehow. Even though he is seems to be bashing the graduating class, he still adds encouraging words. Throughout the whole speech he continuously states that you are not special, but then ending the speech with saying, “You are not special because everyone is.” I argue that both McCullough and Sierra use the strategies of adding comparison, list, and emotion to make their speech and article convincing.…

The final year of high school has now come. When my parents told me that high school would fly by, they weren’t kidding. I never put much thought into the fact that high school is a mere four years of my life. In the grand scheme of things, it’s hardly any time at all. Although it really did fly by, I have enough memories to last a lifetime.…
