In recent years, atopic eczema is considered as one of the most common chronic childhood illnesses. It is an inflammatory skin disorder characterized by itching and a predilection for the flexures (Williams et al., 1999). In the assignment, the high risk and population strategies in preventing atopic eczema will be outlined along with their strengths and limitations respectively.
High Risk Approach
High risk approach means the intervention only targeted at those being identified as high risk in the population (Rose, 1992). It is a high risk approach when parents who have atopic eczema are identified and intervened with them. For instance, probiotics could be used as a preventive strategy for pregnant women with eczema. For example, in United States, The National Eczema Association’s Eczema: Tools for School is a guide for parents and educators to know more about the fact of eczema and how to deal with the disease (Broberg, Kalimo, Lindblad, & Swanbeck, 1990). Furthermore, atopic eczema can be prevented through installing more air humidifiers in schools, offices, malls and public transport so that it helps in keeping the moisture level of skin. Regulations for mitigating air pollution could help in the sense that skin could stay fresh and clean with less air pollutants.
Population Approach – Strengths and Limitations
It recognizes the underlying problems of a disease and it aims at reducing the risks and illnesses of the entire population including those with low or moderate risks (Rose, 1992). Therefore, it improves the health of a whole society instead of certain individuals. However, it only have small individual benefit. It is less effective for individuals where the dose-response relationship of risk and exposure is not found (Rose, 1992). Health disparities may be exacerbated in the sense that only a more-educated family would obtain the kit.
Conclusion
High risk and population are the two approaches in preventing atopic eczema. Each has their respective strengths and limitations, they are not mutually exclusive and both should be adopted for
