“I GOT YOUR BACK” | Backpack Drive Nisharna Nimales th January 20 2015

Summary I would like to help homeless youth achieve a successful future because as a youth myself i know that education is key in order to succeed. Not having a shelter in one of the most important stages of your life can really affect how your future turns out. I’m glad that I am not alone with my concern. Canada’s largest homeless youth agency, Covenant House Toronto, changes lives by providing the widest range of services and support, including education. I decided that I want to help by donating school items and supplies but I also want my neighborhood to be aware and help this organization support future generations.

Context/Research

After searching for organizations that would accept backpacks and other school supplies, I finally came across Covenant House. Their organization focuses on homeless youth. They help atrisk and homeless youth by delivering prevention and awareness programs. About 3,000 young people turn to them annually. They provide 24/7 crisis shelter and housing in the community along with services, including education, counselling, health care, employment assistance, job training and aftercare. To do all this, they rely on donors for about 80 percent of

their $21.8million annual operating budget. They’re open to youth 16 to 24 regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender or identity. Over the past 32 years, Covenant House has served almost 90,000 young people who came to them. They change lives and help youth have a brighter future. “We work to help homeless youth move from a life on the street to a life with a future. “ This quote is from the Covenant House Website and it displays how effective their organization is.

What I did: I first emailed the organization asking on how I can help and what items are needed for this season. I got a response with a list of items and a member asking

Have you ever traveled to a big city such as New York City, Chicago or L.A? As you’re walking down the street, completely captivated by the skyscrapers and chaos of the city, did you notice the man on the corner with sign saying “Homeless. Need money”? More importantly, did you notice the child sitting on the same bench for the three days you were in the city? In the November 2007 edition of the USA Today Magazine, the famous singer/songwriter Jewel Kilcher wrote an article titled “Street Life is No Life for Children”. The article explains the increase in youth homelessness and as a former victim of youth homelessness, Kilcher…

For my Personal Project I wanted to do something with the community that had something dealing with giving. I want collect 500 shirts and pants to donate to the Salvation Army. For me to be able to complete this job I would have to make sure that I stay in contact with the Salvation Army. If you don’t stay in contact they will forget about everything. I’m also going to ask the Wal-Mart on Powder Springs rd. to see if I can use their property so that I can have an event so that I would be in a place where everyone comes so that people know where the place is.…

I knew that they collect and spread resources throughout the community. What I did not know was that they provide opportunity for people to complete community service as part of a sentencing. They do not just give them work to do but counsel and advocate for them as well. One of the people that I worked with when I volunteered was convicted for drug abuse. He had to do community service to meet his sentencing requirements. He also had to do drug counseling. The Major at the Salvation Army works with these people to help them get off drugs and become a productive member of society. I also worked with a few young men who were completing high school through an alternative school program. Then there was Major Carol and I working that day. It was nice to see such a diverse group of people working together to benefit the less fortunate in our community. It was our job to sort and organize food for the Christmas Baskets and the food pantry. They have close to 300 families on their list this year from Marinette and Menominee who will be receiving baskets this year. It is amazing that by volunteering 3 hours one Saturday morning; I will have affected the lives of that many people on Christmas this year. The volunteer assignment experience relates to the theme of our course by showing us that there are less fortunate people in our community and it is the responsibility of everyone in the community to…
