Assignment Brief

Part 1 - Understand the function of computer systems

You are an IT Teacher who has been asked to prepare an introductory lesson on Computer Systems to First Year Undergraduates.

The lesson must cover the following points:

1.1 explain the role of computer systems in different environments 1.2 explain the hardware, software and peripheral components of a computer system 1.3 compare different types of computer systems

You have been asked to prepare a set of PowerPoint slides which fully cover the aims of the lesson. The slides are intended to be used in the classroom but will also be made available to students via the VLE, so must also be fully self-explanatory.

Part 2 - Be able to design computer systems

You are a PC building and maintenance trouble-shooter and your latest client has requested that you specify the ideal system to meet their needs. You take some time to interview the client, who provides you with the following information, which you write down: ‘I am involved with producing content for a printed monthly magazine and their associated website. The PC I need will therefore be used for processing pictures using Photoshop CS6, writing articles using MS Word 2010 and processing video footage using Adobe Premiere Pro CS6. I have already bought all these aforementioned applications with the appropriate licenses. I already have an ASDL (broadband) connection and a service provider that I am happy with. I do all my work at home and therefore do not need mobile computer facilities.’ You have been asked to build a bespoke system and must identify the components that you will use to build the required system and list the suppliers and prices. You also have to justify the reasons for your choices in terms of performance, price, reliability etc. to ensure that the system meets the needs of the user. Note: Do not waste time shopping around for the best prices, but also ensure that you are not paying exorbitant prices for any parts.

You have been set a budget for the complete system of £800.00, which you have been asked not to exceed. If you want to spend more than this then you must state your full rationale so that the client will be convinced that the expenditure of the extra funds is worthwhile.

Part 3 - Be able to build and configure computer systems

You will build a computer system in class from components supplied to you. You must observe and document all the steps involved in building a Computer System, including all the necessary Health and...
