P7: Explain how team building leads to team cohesion in the public services, with reference to relevant theorists.

Types of Team building activities:
Paper-Based:
For paper based activities you can either have disaster planning activities or logistics planning activities.
For example a SWAT team discussing about how to extractna certain target from a secure place. The table top activity is effective as you can make detailed plans in a safe area and as there could be lives at risk they would take a very careful and detailed look at the situation while planning.

Tuckman's Theory:
In class we studied Tuckman's theory. He created the theory in 1965 with four stages of team development, before amending it in 1970 to five stages. Tuckman believed that a team would have to go through each of the stages in order to become a successful team. The four stages:

Teams are normally formed through testing interpersonal and task behaviors and picking the right people who well come together and make a successful team. This is developing stage. It is when the team members are formed and come together. They have a very weak connection at this point.

Storming:
This stage is when ideas are shared but there is still a weak structure to the team which could lead to there being conflict between the members as they will not agree on what the best idea is. There are not any made plans at this point and nothing is organised yet.

Norming:
The group then start to share and develop ideas and start to agree with each other. This is when the team actually starts to form into a team that can be productive and start to get the work that needs to be done. It might become apparent that someone has taken lead of the group and is starting to organize everyone one with

The group identity is really becoming clear. This stage is considered complete when the structure of the group is completely solidified and the members of the group have decided on what is considered proper behavior for members of the group. After reading this case study and reviewing our textbook, I have concluded that this group is definitely in the Norming stage of team development. According to our text, " The Norming stage of team development sometimes called initial integration, is the point at which the members really start to come together as a coordinated unit." (pg. 157). This is the stage where things are starting to come together and any bickering that may have been going on has ceased to continue. This team would almost be ready to go into the Performing Stage except for one setback…

Although advantage of group working is obviously, especially on complex or multiple task solving, it is also much harder for company to set up effective teams. Because team members have different motivation and background, it is time-consuming to gather them and achieve same goal. That is why it is critical for company to have group development and build sound relationship between group members. To clarify, there is very useful theory, Tuckman’s five-stage model of group development. The Forming – Storming – Norming – Performing-Adjourning model of group development was considered necessary and inevitable for the team to grow, to conquer challenges, to resolve problems, to get solutions and to deliver results. If team members go through these five stages, their cohesiveness increase, with better performance.…
