First of all we need to look at what is meant by the word ‘carer’. A government website agrees “the word ‘carer’ means someone who looks after a friend, relative or neighbour who needs support because of their sickness, age or disability”. (Directgov 2006). A carer goes beyond what is expected from a relative, friend or neighbour; they are not paid like some professionals known as care workers, although they are vital to the government in providing care to some of the most vulnerable. The type of care given within the family environment saves the government billions a year which otherwise would be unaffordable. I would explain this to Hannah by telling her that ‘confidentiality’ states that everybody has the right to expect that any information they give to a health or social care worker will only be used for the reason it was given and will not be disclosed without the persons permission. People have the right to control access to their own personal information so a health or social care worker cannot discuss matters relating to the individual outside the work setting. I would also explain that confidentiality can be breached if the person that the information related to would be at harm if it was not disclosed and would be in the best interest of the individual. In this situation, the information would be disclosed to a senior member of staff and they would then decide who is the best person to contact regarding the individuals concerned.…
