Fight of Great Personalities Against the System
If you believed in something, would you give it up just to follow the crowd? Would you lie to yourself just to blend in? When Martin Luther king fought for rights of African Americans, he did just the opposite of that, as did Rosa Parks. In Long Walk to Freedom: Autobiography of Nelson Mandela by Nelson Mandela, he says “…when a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw.” This quote could have many different meanings depending on your point of view, but I have my own interpretation. This quote proves that if someone has a belief that isn’t allowed based on someone’s religion, or the country they live in, they have no choice but to turn against those people. You could change your beliefs to match that group of people, but then you aren’t being true to yourself. My belief in this statement shows that everyone should be able to believe in what they want, not in what everyone else believes in. Two films we watched this year that support my theory are Snow White and the Huntsman, directed by Rupert Sanders and released in 2012 and Iron- Jawed Angels, directed by Katja Van Garnier and release in 2004. These two films both portray strong women standing up for what they believe in and being very defiant. In Iron- Jawed Angels, Alice Paul loses her right to fight for women’s rights, but she continues to try and stand up. Snow White loses all of her freedom when she is locked up for almost her whole childhood. These defiant women both were “denied the right to live the life they believe in”, and they fought against it.
Not being able to live your life the way you would like to is something I have never experienced, but Snow White experiences is firsthand in an extreme way. Her step-mother, Ravenna, takes away her freedom by locking her up for most of her childhood. Snow white isn’t allowed to live her life how she wants to, but how she is allowed to, being held hostage. The movie depicts everything as very dark and

Snow White has the purest soul and the kindest personality, which makes her so perfect that not being capable to be a movie character, because perfect means boring for a protagonist. Besides boring, Snow White is obviously the weakest and most brainless character, that she didn’t show any spirit of revolt or independence, making friends and great relationships with animals and dwarfs, chasing by a hunter in the forest, waiting for the prince’s kiss after having the poisoned apple from the queen. Snow White has taken a negative and a passive position since the start of the movie. Even the song (Someday My Prince will come) opened up her mind with blind optimism and useless waiting attitude. But citizens enjoyed watching such story, that Snow White was made for her era, that the dejected Americans needed such a fairytale to bring their confidences back to life after the great depression ended in…

In the story, this is evident when Snow-White is specially treated on multiple occasions ― for obvious reasons. The first, is when the huntsman, who is tasked with killing Snow-White , hesitates after her pleading “because she was so beautiful”. As a result, she is spared and allowed to flee. The second occurrence is when the seven dwarfs returned home only to learn that their home had been intruded upon by Snow-White. In modern times, regardless of identity, this would be condemned and considered an act of crime. However once again, instead of being reprimanded, the dwarfs exclaimed “This child is so beautiful”, disregarding her intrusion as “they did not wake her up, but let her continue to sleep there in the bed”. In all cases regardless of her character, she is spared and specially treated because beauty in this story is regarded as the most…

How will this influence the minds of young viewers? What people will take away from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a positive idea of Christianity. Although the story of Snow White is based off of the German Grimm’s Fairy Tale. The Walt Disney version that has just been studied in detail was the first Disney Feature Film and came from America. In America in 1937, there was not much religious diversity compared to today. Obviously the producers of the movie will promote Christian views. In fact, another version of the story (which is extremely similar) has Snow White’s life being saved because people were able to figure out how to heal her due to them seeing the beauty during her Christian burial. If we were to compare the religious background of Snow White to a much more modern Disney Film such as The Princess and the Frog (2009) there would be a huge…

The hardest part about standing up for one’s rights is that everyone else may agree with the government’s prejudiced beliefs. Society is often guilty for persecuting entire races, sexes, and nationalities; it’s not just their leaders. Inequality is so common that it can be witnessed daily. Individuals should still try to abolish these ideas no matter the consequences or how hard it may be. The United States of America has a declaration of independence that…

Bridget Whelan 23-24), which means that it was better for her to be seen and not heard and even better not there at all. Snow White was born of wealth, but because of her wicked step-mothers longing to rule the kingdom and be the fairest in the land, her wealth was taken from her and she was forced to work as house servant. Snow White doesn’t let her misfortune get the best of her, because she has been taught that she will be rescued by her knight in shining armor and saved from her dreary life as a servant. When Snow white feels that she is in danger she decides to run away, when she has run as far as she can, she comes across a cottage that is home to the seven dwarfs. The dwarfs allow her to stay with them and to thank them for their generosity she is compelled to clean for them, which is conveyed in the lines “…Now you wash the dishes, you tidy up the room. You feed the fireplace, and I’ll use the broom” (Mickey Mouse Monopoly) this statement conveys that snow white’s natural instinct is to be a homemaker and take care of people, and she does this by doing what she has been trained to do which is cooking, cleaning, and taking care of children. Eventually Snow Whites step mother poisons her and she is thrown into a deep sleep, and the only thing that can wake her is a kiss from her true love. Snow White is awakened by the kiss of Prince Charming, and she rides off with him to be married and live happily ever after. This movie sends a message to young girls that however bleak their lives may seem to be their prince will come to the rescue and take them away from their situation,…

The Brothers Grimm version is a crude and barbaric telling of the story of Snow White. Their version of Snow White has the evil stepmother who makes not one but three attempts to kill Snow White. Once all attempts eventually fail the evil stepmother goes to the wedding “were they put a pair of iron shoes into the fire until they glowed, and she had to put them on and dance in them. Her feet were terribly burned, and she could not stop until she had danced herself to death” (National Geographic’s 04 March 2011). This Brothers Grimm version was not a child’s fairy tale. It was meant for a mature audience, and therefore one could take the liberty to tell a dreadful…

However, standing up for what one believes in does not always work or is a viable option. For instance, Anne Frank could not speak out against the Nazis without facing certain death (Frank 374). Even though she could not stand up for herself, she wrote about what she went through, so the world would know about the hardships she had to face. Anne’s father later published her diary, which inspires millions to have a positive outlook when faced with troubling times. Yet, when one does not stand up for themselves or have someone stand up for them, the consequences are dire. For example, if the Allied Powers had not rose together and defeated the Axis Powers, then the world could be controlled by the unjust laws of the Nazi Party (Krystek). By standing together the Allied Powers fought for the freedoms and rights of many people who could not stand up for themselves. Martin Luther King Jr. was also a proponent of standing up for oneself in a nonviolent manner. In fact, “. . . he led a massive protest in Birmingham, Alabama, that caught the attention of the entire world, providing what he called a coalition of conscience” (Martin Luther King Jr. - Biography). This protest led to a law that desegregated downtown stores in the city of Birmingham (Children’s Crusade). MLK fought for the freedoms of many African Americans, including the residents of Birmingham,…

The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and 60’s resulted in a repeal of the laws that restricted the rights of African-Americans. Their peacefulness and courage allowed them to gain the rights that everyone in this nation enjoys today. But rioting and violence has never solved anything. All that violence has proven to do is divide the nation and ruin lives. As the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior once famously quoted, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” In addition, it is common fact that the founding fathers built this nation upon Judeo-Christian values, namely the Bible. In the Bible, it says to respect authority and follow the law, for God has set up all authorities. However, it also says that whenever the laws of the land conflicts with God’s, follow God’s Law instead (Romans 13: 1-7: Mark 12:17). This freedom of peaceful civil disobedience is endowed to us by not only the founders, but by our Creator. One may even contend that to not take a stand against what you believe to be an unjust law is, in fact, furthering the injustice. To sacrifice one’s own comfort, and risk fines or jail time in order to peacefully bring attention to injustice is certainly a selfless…

Chisholm stated that women are subject to demeaning experiences no matter where they are. For example, when a woman walks into an office for an interview, “the first questions she will be asked is, ‘Do you type?’” This is demeaning because this makes women think that they cannot achieve greater things in life even if they want to. Another example of this is that the “unspoken assumption is that women are different” and too emotional. When women find out about these things, it puts them down. Although it puts them down, Chisholm was there to bring their spirit back up again. Chisholm also brought up a point about how women are “submitted to oppression and even cooperated with it.” This should not be the case because women should always feel as though they can do what they want when they want to do it. They should not accept that men think that they are not equal even though they are. Women need to fight for what they believe in and not give in to others thought and beliefs. The women have to stand up to the people who think they are not worthy enough to be equal to men. Even if they are standing up to the women that are submitting to the fact that men think they are not equal, it is worth it. This would make them even more brave because they would be standing up to their own. By standing up to their own, they are showing everyone, especially the women, that others opinions do not matter to them, they have their own opinions. She is saying stand up to anyone who thinks that you are not capable of doing what you know you can do. Although bravery is present in realistic situations, bravery is also present in fictional characters in literary works. An example of one of these literary works is the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.…

    Entitlement in America

Everyone should be entitled to freedom of speech, choice, and enough food to survive, but have to earn everything else. Being free to say something allows people to speak their mind and help others. Many famous scientists, authors, politicians, etc., have become known around the world by what they have said, and in return, it has helped many others in their life. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. once said “a man who won’t die for something is not fit to live.” This quote has changed many people’s lives by giving them something to believe in. Everyone chooses to do things, and sometimes they do it without knowing. In “The Necklace,” by Guy De Maupassant, Mr. and Mrs. Loisel make multiple choices during the story, but one choice changed their life completely. When Mr. Loisel tells his wife that she should tell her friend “you’ve broken the clasp on the necklace and are getting it mended,” he is telling Mrs. Loisel to lie to her friend. She chose to lie to her friend, even though she was wrong, because it was her choice to. Being entitled to freedom of speech and choice are both great things to be able to do, but everybody needs food to live and make those decisions. Many people die from starvation everyday, and even though food costs money, it is what people are entitled to have. There are many organizations in the world that collect donated food and give them to the poor so they can eat.…

Few people can grow up within today's society without knowing the tale of Snow White. From the Grimm Brothers to Disney, it has been told and retold to children throughout the ages. However, what is often overlooked are the true meanings within the story. Fairytales typically have underlying messages that can be found between the lines, generally in terms of the key themes. Snow-White discusses the theme of jealousy, and shows how humans' obsessions of material can lead to their own downfall as well as the harm of others. When focusing on the relationship between Snow-White and her stepmother the Queen, it is evident that the jealousy inside the story results in a power struggle in which beauty and pride are seen as the basis for the stepmother’s envy towards Snow-White. “This gave the queen a great shock, and she became yellow and green with envy, from that hour her heart turned against Snow-White, and she hated her.”…
