Snow White's Frozen: Traditional Princess Movies

“We don’t think of it as a traditional Princess Movie.”, from the producer of Frozen. In fact, Disney Animation Studio hasn’t produced traditional Princess Movie for a long time. After the rise of Pixar and DreamWorks, Disney is always finding its own differences from other animation studios, that what is its unique and simple. They understand more clear that they must “keep moving forward”, not only on the prince & princess story plot, but also on the development of the internal thesis. When politics talk about Disney Princess, they may concern a lot with the feminism, that women has taken half parts of the role on the Earth. Through reviewing different Princess Movies from different eras in the history, audience may notice the influence of
Snow White has the purest soul and the kindest personality, which makes her so perfect that not being capable to be a movie character, because perfect means boring for a protagonist. Besides boring, Snow White is obviously the weakest and most brainless character, that she didn’t show any spirit of revolt or independence, making friends and great relationships with animals and dwarfs, chasing by a hunter in the forest, waiting for the prince’s kiss after having the poisoned apple from the queen. Snow White has taken a negative and a passive position since the start of the movie. Even the song (Someday My Prince will come) opened up her mind with blind optimism and useless waiting attitude. But citizens enjoyed watching such story, that Snow White was made for her era, that the dejected Americans needed such a fairytale to bring their confidences back to life after the great depression ended in
In the first three princess movie, feminist elements appear as villains: Snow White’s Evil Queen, Cinderella’s metamorphosis stepmother, Sleeping Beauty’s devil godmother (also may turned into a fire-breathing dragon), that women are either full of desire to rights and policies, or full of jealousy to beauty and wealth, or purely abstract devils. Their unrealistic evil, is another extreme far from princesses’ unrealistic kindness. As what people think of Lilith’s demonization, these female villains are the widespread prejudices from patriarchal society, that whenever women desire power, they turn into devil.

On the other hand, all the men appear in the film, without any exception, are full of kindness: the Hunter who releases Snow White, Seven Dwarfs who fight the evil queen, the Prince who kisses, and even Cinderella’s own father and her future father-in-law. In conclusion, feminist has been demeaning and vilified by the society from the early Disney Princess Movie.
