Article Rebuttal: BBC News “Arctic Summers Ice Free By 2013”
The British Broadcasting Corporation, better known as BBC, has a business division devoted to gathering and broadcasting current events. Since 1934 BBC News has been independently reporting the news from around the world (Crisell, 1997). BBC News is the largest broadcast news operation in the world (Boaden, 2004). BBC News is also a quasi-autonomous corporation, making it formally independent of government and required to report impartially. “The BBC News mantra has always been one of truth, impartiality, accuracy and diversity of opinion” (Boaden, 2004, para. 6).
The Article
On December 12, 2007 the BBC published an article titled, “Arctic Summers Ice-Free ‘by 2013” written by Johnathan Amos (2007). This article stated that by 2013 all the ice covering the arctic during the summer would be gone. Amos cited United States scientist, Professor Wieslaw Maslowski, in saying, “Our Projection of 2013 for the removal of ice in the summer is not accounting for the last two minima, in 2005 and 2007, given that fact, you can argue that maybe our projection of 2013 is already too conservative.” Professor Maslowski was part of a group of scientists that included coworkers from Nasa and the Institute of Oceanology. By using computer generated models and information they gathered, the group of scientists predicted the ice would be gone by 2013. The article went on to push the agenda of global warming being a contributing factor in the melting ice. Professor Maslowski stated that he and his group had already taken their information to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in the continued effort to push for global and
