Arm Span Vs Height Ratios Lab Report
Arm Span to Height Ratios in Men Versus Women

Introduction: Arm span versus height ratios can be very helpful pieces of information. Arm span is the closest physiologic measurement to standing height and an increased arm span to standing height ratio can indicate a loss of height (Chestnut 2009). What is not mentioned, though, is if these ratios differ at all between male and females. Our goal in our assignment was to determine that there was a difference in the ratios between genders. Methods: The height and arm span were measured on 10 males and 10 females. In order to receive accurate data, the same people measured each time. To measure height, each person stood straight up in front of a tape measure taped on the wall and then a meter stick was placed on their head to avoid their hair from alter the data at all. In

Alternate (HA): There is a difference in the ratio of height versus arm span in males and females.

Results: The ratios for the 10 males and 10 females were calculated. The male’s ratios ranged from 0.979-1.078 and the female’s ratios ranged from 0.969-1.044 (Figure 1). The mean ± for the males was 1.0149 ± 0.03153 and the women’s was 0.9957 ± 0.02268. I then used the Student’s t test and determined that ts = 1.564. Due to the fact that it was less than t0.05,df=18=2.010 the Ho, or null hypothesis, was accepted.

Discussion and Conclusions: The Ho was accepted and therefore we can conclude that there is no statistical difference between the arm span to height ratios in males versus females. Although there did seem to be an observable difference when you look at the data or the histogram, the degree of overlap most likely caused the lack of a statistical difference between the two groups. In order to increase the accuracy of this experiment we could increase the sample size even more and also account for differing genetics and ethnic

ii. 4. heights and skeletal remains (Professor Steckel’s research) Individual height is determined by “genetic potential” basically how tall were your mom and dad. In large numbers, we know that heights of humans does not vary by race or ethnicity. In large numbers differences are due to environmental factors like diet, nutritious, stress and work effort during growing years, diseases…

For this analysis to be valid the frequency of female and male respondents must be relatively even or 50/50. The frequency of the female respondents was 169, and the frequency of male respondents was 128 with a total of 297 respondents as shown in table 2. This does not easily show that the frequency of males to females is even. However the relative frequency of female respondents was 56.9 percent…

Ethnicity of the subjects affected the data collected, as shown in Table 1. There was a wide range of ethnicities of the subjects but not all ethnicities were represented. Almost half of the subjects were of Indian, Scottish, or Chinese decent and no other ethnicity was represented more than once. Of those subjects, two of them represented almost the largest difference between height and arm span, besides one Canadian subject. Between those 3 subjects, all with arm span great then height, the average difference in height and arm span is13.6 cm contributing to the greater standard deviation in the arm span data as compared to the height data as shown in Table 3. There may be a greater difference in arm span compared to height in different ethnicities, which was also concluded by Reeve et al., 1996. They found a significant difference between arm span and height in Afro Caribbean individuals of both genders, and in Asian…

" The female surface-related BMR values are approximately 10% below the male values through life” (Zubieta, 2002).On the other hand, the various categories affecting BMR were also evaluated by specific measurements of height, weight, and age for each gender. The data illustrates that with increasing height, the BMR increases as well (Graph 1). The mean height for males is higher than the mean height for females resulting in males having higher BMRs. The BMR also increases with increasing weight (Refer to Graph 2). However, with increasing age, the BMR decreases (refer to Table I and II). The height and weight measured should not be…

Back in the 1850’s Americans were considered the tallest people in the world, but now they are the third tallest around the world. This study revealed that this change is due to the plasticity in people’s childhood and in their mother’s childhood as well. Girls that are undernourished and in poor health causes them to be shorter in height as an adult due to the compromise her body makes while growing up. Her short height can then be passed down to her fetus. The small reproductive system of the mother most likely does not supply an adequate level of nutrients and oxygen to her fetus. Therefore, the child can be born weighing less than normal and will continue the slow growth through out their childhood. Stronger evidence used to support the study among height of group of people is the studies on monozygotic twins. Monozygotic twins are identical genetically, but sometimes can end…
