Argumentative Essay: The Most Important Thing In The Olympics

Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympics, once said that "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part.” Well, I believe that no one should be taking part in the Olympics, because they should be cancelled. Yes, it can be argued that they provide countries with sometimes much needed unity and strength to improve, and that the Olympics are highly competitive that is great for the athletes competing. But, the pros greatly overweigh the cons. The Olympics should be cancelled because of the poor results it has to the environment of the city it takes place in, the terrorism that is greatly increased to happen again after the catastrophic event at the Munich Olympics in 1972, the diseases that the athletes, and other members of the team can get from visiting foreign countries, and what happens to the country after the Olympics resulting in corruption. Previous Olympics have seen drastic environmental changes to the host city. Citizens are forced out of their homes because of the stadium construction, that also affects the tourism in that area before the games happen. To prevent such tragedy from happening the only thing to do would be to stop the games from ever happening again and the ones that are going on now should be halted immediately to prevent any more disaster from plaguing Germany.
