One huge change that has been brought on due to the social and political changes in our country is the overall interpretation of our coalitions, to our nation and ourselves. Because of the increase of nationalism, we, Americans, have changed our social boundaries and opened more opportunities for equality in the United States. As changes were beginning to happen, America grew troubled as it attempted to keep up with its political amendments and growing economy. In The Gettysburg Address, President Lincoln refers in the opening phrase, “Four score and seven years ago,” to the founding of America through another important written document, the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The phrase, “the American dream” can mean numerous different things, but among the most rudimentary interpretation is that America is a land of opportunity and freedom for all who come to it. The idea of the American dream has influenced people to come to America in search of economic opportunities, political choice, and religious freedom. Americans/the colonists had wanted freedom from Great Britain because they were not being treated like citizens of the crown since they were alienated from it by the Atlantic. Workers receive the full fruits of their labors instead of being given miniscule compensation for backbreaking labor. Since the people are paid well for their work, work becomes a cooperative entity where people come to rely on one another and people actually are more inclined to do their fair share to help the advancement of society as a whole. The roots of this movement were based on reforms to the social and economic systems that were keeping the immigrants enslaved by the current systems that were in place. The 1800s saw a rapid industrial development in America. Between 1800 and 1900 the per capita income rose from
$200 to more than $1200. However, the distribution of wealth was uneven, 1% of the population
owned 54% of the wealth. It is in the background that socialism flourished. Socialism was a message of hope, when the workers could see no hope for their lives. America society’s growth has granted more opportunities for African Americans. As the dependence on the number of laborers increased because of industrialization and economical changes in the nation, African Americans were permitted to show that they were equal to the majority.
