Appropriate Classroom Behavior.
Behavior is a choice, and a teacher's role is to aid students when learning to make good choices.

Inappropriate behavior is not acceptable. It should be followed by negative consequences and therefore be discouraged. When the teacher responds to different behaviors, either positive, or negative, it teaches the student something.

School is a place where students are given the opportunity to learn and receive an education as well as socialize. Part of the learning process is interaction, however, it should only occur when the time is suitable. Being in the classroom should be considered a privilege. That privilege should only be given if a student's behavior does not interfere with the ability of the teacher to teach effectively or the ability of other students to participate in classroom learning activities.

Consequences should be given to individual students who choose to interrupt the teacher's lesson or distract others. A whole class should not be punished but should be aware of how that behavior was not right.

The teacher in this video has complete control of her classroom. She clearly expects the students to act when asked, and she cues them with verbal directions and nonverbal hand motions. She does not have to repeat herself, nor do any students seem confused of defiant. An excellent example of this is when she directs the students to pick up their hand chimes, play them, and then stop. I have had experience with this age group of students, and understand how difficult it can be for this age of students to not become distracted by an instrument and impulsively play it. However, the students in video case #0079 show restraint and proper behavior when they are instructed to stop playing. Her expectations and routines have created a learning climate where the students are at ease and engaged, display respect for the structure of her classroom, and display appropriate…

The consequence that maintained John’s verbally disruptive behavior was the teacher giving him a referral and sending him to the office. It seems like John doesn’t enjoy math. With that being said, ending instruction to get the class back in order and sending him out of the class, in which he was performing math is giving him what he wants. The teacher’s intention was for the removal of class to act as a punishment for John. However, John may view it as positive reinforcement, because math class is uncomfortable and challenging for John. By sending John to the principal office, the cause of his problem behavior is not being addressed. For that reason an intervention strategy is more than necessary.…

Sam punching the other children is the main behavior that needs to be addressed. The reason this needs to be addressed is because, it is not acceptable to punch our classmates in the stomach. Sam knows the cause and effect of hitting his classmates in the stomach. So we also need to address why he feels the need to punch the children then put himself in timeout. I also need to address if Sam understands what rules are. Am I as a teacher explaining the consequences of bad…

As a teacher I have the responsibility to teach my students while maintaining a safe learning environment, this includes both physical and mental safety. The best way to do this is by clearly posting and discussing the rules and rights for students in the classroom, and the consequences for breaking them. Giving this same information in handout form that needs to be signed by parents and students will ensure that everyone knows what is to be expected of them. This will influence the students’ rights by letting them know that even with the right to free speech, there is a time and place for everything. Although every student has the right to an education, if one student becomes disruptive enough to threaten the safety of the classroom removal of that student may be necessary. It is unfair to the other students who adhere to the classroom policies to be punished for one student’s misconduct. In this situation I feel it is fair to infringe upon the one students rights for the sake of the learning…

The article opens with a case study on a seventh grader named Jason. Jason is considered low achieving and performs below grade level. Mr. Monroe does not want to bore the high achieving students during class but also does not want to leave anyone behind. One day he is using the smartboard to explain simplifying fractions. Because they consider this a waste of time, the high achieving students talk amongst themselves and distract the students that are paying attention as the low achieving students complain about the complexity of the material. Mr. Monroe warns them to stop talking and to pay attention but this only makes the situation worse. Jason states aloud that all teachers suck. After being threatened with an office referral Jason says that he would rather be there than in the classroom. This is a classic example of nonviolent misbehavior. The article outlines three key elements to remember when dealing with classroom misconduct: behavior is predictable, behavior is preventable, and preventing problem behavior requires attention to instruction.…

I must admit that in the past I did participate in some teasing of other students and complaining about a few teachers that I have had. I have come to realize that it is not appropriate. As a future educator I believe there is a line that students should not cross when it comes to making fun of others or complaining about teachers. A student should never talk about other teachers in the building, especially in front of another educator. Respect is one thing I highly value and when someone does not show me respect I get upset. In the same regard, I try to show others the respect I want to receive. So with that being said I have started to work on a few repercussions for inappropriate behaviors in my class room that will hopefully prevent the students from acting out…

Classroom management and promoting consistent behavior patterns amongst students are also important survival skills teachers must possess. Each teacher must establish their own set of classroom rules and consistently follow them. I feel that a few simple rules to follow and a predetermined conduct code will work in most classrooms. If students are aware of their expectations and appropriate behavior, there will be less disruptions and more respect for their classmates and you. I also feel that our behavior and attitude towards students, fellow faculty members, and parents must be consistent. According to the video and our reading, our classrooms…
