Antioxidant Capacity Of Bifurcaria Bifucara Lab Report
The antioxidant capacity of Bifurcaria bifurcata extracts from the Peniche coast was evaluated by the analysis of the total polyphenol content (TPC), by the DPPH free radical scavenging activity and by Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC). The results are expressed in Table 1. The methanolic fraction was more potent than the dichloromethane fraction, with an EC50 of 58.82µg/mL (50.65 – 68.31), which was very similar with the standards, ascorbic acid and BHT, that exhibited an EC50 of 22.43µg/mL (16.07-31.30) and 40.55µg/mL (27.39 – 60.05), respectively. By contrast, the EC50 obtained for the dichloromethane fraction was 344.70µg/mL (246.10 – 482.80) revealing to be six times less potent than the methanolic fraction. Regarding the TPC, …show more content…
This is due to the high amount of polyphenolic constituents present in the alga, with polar characteristics, which were capable of functioning as free radical scavengers. Moreover, the high antioxidant activity revealed can be mainly explained by the presence of a unique kind of molecules produced by brown algae, the phlorotannins. Phlorotannins are polymers of phloroglucinol (1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene) and may constitute up to 15% of the dry weight of brown algae and have high antioxidant activity due to the presence of multiple phenolic groups (Koivikko et al., 2008). These phenolic compounds assist the algae to overcome oxidative stress as well as play a putative adaptive role in defense against grazers, such as marine herbivores due to their plasticity characteristics (Chew et al., …show more content…
bifurcata can be an interesting source of natural antioxidant compounds. Moreover, algae are rich in polysaccharides and minerals, but very few of them have been used widely as edible plants. The idea of the B. bifurcata as high natural source of antioxidants can potentiate its use and elevate its beneficial value as human food or for additives extraction and purification. Additionally, the antioxidants detected on this alga can be used as an alternative to the synthetic antioxidants such as BHT, which use have been very controversy due to many evidences that can contribute for the development of several diseases related with cancer (Heo et al., 2005). Moreover, the methanolic fraction contains a mixture of compounds therefore the isolation and purification can afford molecules with even higher antioxidant

Chromatography paper can be used to separate mixed chemicals, including mixed chloroplast pigments prepared from extract from fresh green grass or spinach. The mixture of pigments was prepared from organic greens, which were cleaned, cut into small pieces and bathed in acetone overnight (S. W. Jeffrey). The different pigments, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and beta carotene have different polarities, due to which the separation of these pigments is possible with chromatography paper.…

Spinach extract was separated into fractions containing compounds of similar polarity by column chromatography. Based on solid-liquid phase partitioning, this separation technique exploited the different polarity of the compounds in the spinach extract. Three fractions with different colors were obtained. The extract and its fractions were analyzed using thin layer chromatography (TLC). The TLC results showed that there was one compound (Rf=0.979) in the first fraction; there were three compounds (Rf1=0.839, Rf2= 0.691, Rf3=0.149) in the second fraction; there was one compound (Rf=0.017) in the third fraction. The separations of compounds which went to the first and third fraction were relatively satisfying, while the second fraction had several kinds of compounds.…

Polyphenols (also sometimes termed ‘phenolics’), are benzene rings which is a class of chemical compounds that consists of a hydroxyl (-OH) group, which is directly bonded to an aromatic hydrocarbon group. Phenolic compounds are widely produced industrially however; they are also produced by plants (mainly for protection against stress) and microorganisms where variations occur between different species.…

Ginkgo biloba leaf extracts have been known to be the main source for its medicinal properties. Its main effect is in the human body’s circulatory system. Studies have shown that it improves blood circulation by reducing the adhesiveness of blood platelets and dilating the blood vessels. There are two types of chemicals in ginkgo biloba that are tested to be effective antioxidant properties which are…

Toxic algae blooms have infected many bodies of waters throughout the world and has greatly affected animals, humans, the environment, and even our economy. Toxic algae blooms can be detrimental to the environment and can singlehandedly turn a once healthy ecosystem into an inhabitable ‘dead zone’. Many marine mammals have been dying rapidly due to these toxic algae that poison the brain and lead to death that travels up through the food chain and eventually to us humans. The sentinels of our oceans have been affected by toxic algae blooms enormously. Marine mammals act as our signals as to what is occurring in our oceans. The fact that they are dying rapidly is not a good sign. Many marine mammals have been dying rapidly due to toxic algae that poison their brains and leads to death that travels up through the food chain and eventually to us humans (Weiss).…

Logistic regression showed that participants with the lowest cognitive functioning (25th percentile) had a higher probability of having low levels of specific plasma carotenoids (,1st quartile): lycopene and zeaxanthin. This shows that Low carotenoid level in the blood could be the cause of cognitive impairment. (Akbaraly, et al. 2007). Fucoxanthum a carotenoid extracted in macroalgae by using of powdered seaweed (Undaria Pinnatifida) with chloroform/methanol (2:1) v/v. Undaria lipids containing the Fucoxanthin 9.6% was obtained from the powdered seaweed while 78% from the crude. Fucoxanthin also enhances the amount of DHA in the liver. This shows the chance of dietary fucoxanthin stimulated increase DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in biological system without direct DHA supplementation. DHA is naturally originate in the body in small amounts, and is the most abundant omega 3 fatty acid in the brain. DHA oil is abundant in some marine microalgae (Miyashita, et al. 2008). A Twenty-four week supplementation with 900 mg/d DHA improved learning and memory function in age related cognitive decline (ARCD) and is a beneficial supplement that supports cognitive health with aging and with Alzheimer’s disease. The omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are orthomolecular, conditionally essential nutrients that enhance quality of life and lower the risk of premature death. They function exclusively via cell membranes, in which they are anchored by phospholipid molecules. DHA is proven essential to pre- and postnatal brain development, whereas EPA seems more…

Certain species of algae have the ability to produce high levels of carbohydrates instead of lipids as reserve polymers. These species are ideal candidates for the production of bioethanol as carbohydrates from algae can be extracted to produce fermentable sugars. In addition, microalgae-based carbohydrates are mainly in the form of starch and cellulose (with the absence of lignin), are thus much easier to convert to monosaccharides when compared with lignocellulosic materials (Harun et al., 2010; Ho et al., 2012; John et al., 2011). Many researchers have reported that the genus of Chlorella possess has a high carbohydrate content, especially the species of Chlorella vulgaris, with carbohydrates being 37-55% of its dry weight (Brennan and Owende, 2010; Dragone et al., 2011; Illman et al., 2000). The carbohydrates in green algae mainly come from starch in chloroplasts and cellulose/polysaccharides on cell walls (Richmond, 2004). The growth of microalgae and the composition of microalgae biomass are known to be greatly dependent on the light supply (type of light source and light intensity) (Ogbonna and Tanaka, 2000) medium composition (especially Carbon and nitrogen sources) (Li et al. 2008; Liu et al. 2008; Liang et…
