Antigone Summary
The main character in this play is Antigone. It begins with Antigone not being allowed to bury her brother. Antigone decides that she doesn’t care that Creon, the king of Thebes, forbid her to do so. She was angry about this and tells her sister Isemene that that night she is going to sneak out, and bury their brother. Isemene advised against it because she was afraid Antigone would be caught, and killed, but Antigone insisted. Seeing that there was no way to talk her out of it Isemene promised that she would not tell anyone of the crime Antigone was committing. So that night Antigone snuck out of the castle and covered the body with a thin film of dirt. The next morning a guard came to Creon saying that someone had covered the body with a thin film of dirt. Hearing this Creon became angry and told the guards to spy on the body, and see if the lawbreaker came back. Antigone being unaware of the guards went out again to bury her brother. She began to scrape dirt over the body when the …show more content…
He may become even more fearful than before because the kingdom is all he has left. Creon also feels responsible for his wife’s death for he says “Ah me, this guilt can never be fixed on any other of mortal kind for me acquittal! I, even I, was thy slayer, wretched that I am I own the truth.” It is very possible that Creon does not change. He could become so terrified of losing what little he had left that he becomes an even worse king than he already was.
Antigone is an amazing play it is defiantly a tragedy but an outstanding play nonetheless. It keeps you interested the entire time. I believe that Creon does change for the better that he becomes a less fearful man. Antigone and Haemon commit suicide to be together. Haemon’s mother kills herself to be with her son and poor Creon is left alone to rule the kingdom. Hopefully he does not rule with grief or fear but with strength and

“Nothing you say can touch me any more. My own blind heart has brought me from darkness to final darkness.” (Page 806 Lines 94-96) Creon was so sad that he could not feel any pain. Creon says that nothing can touch him; nothing can make him any sadder than he already is. He also says that his blind heart has taken him from darkness to complete darkness, by this he means that he was already sad when he found out the news of Hameon then found out about his wife also. Creon’s life took a complete change of routes and it all happened so sudden. Creon released his emotions and felt sorrow for…

When Creon stated "No woman while I live shall govern me," it gave the one a sense that he could be a sexist, or even a little more stubborn toward certain people ruling over him. This only proves how hard Creon's attitude of acceptance is to accept another person in power. It also can be seen how his lack of acceptance could turn into a downfall. This lacking of acceptance in Creon could one day be a life or death situation. For example, if Creon is told that death is near and he refuses to accept death. Whether he accepts death or not does not matter because death will still come. This supports the fact that Creon has a very stubborn will.…

In some respects Creon is seen as a positive character, in others as an antagonist. However, if one sees it from a different perspective, it's obvious that Creon is the victim of fate and his own flaws, making him a tragic hero. His first misfortune was to fall from the grace of his people when saying that Antigone should die for her actions. "Your people are beginning to question your judgment and are beginning to side with Antigone." (256-257) This scene is very ironic! Creon is actually trying to maintain his authority by being a ruler of his word, but he is actually losing respect. Creon's present situation foreshadows unrest and growing calamity within his own family. The idea of him losing…

Creon's human flaws and emotions such as pride and arrogance lead to his ultimate downfall. Creon's ego prevents him from listening to any advice given to him. He states "My voice is the one voice giving orders in this city". Creon is not willing to listen to anybody, because he believes that going back on a decision will somehow destroy his pride. He says his voice is the only one giving orders stating that he will listen to know one but himself showing the characteristic of being ignorant or stubborn and only doing what he believes is the right thing. When the Choragus, who represents the people, speaks for them and says "If that is your will, Creon son of Menoikus, you have the right to enforce it: we are yours". They are basically stating that if that is creons word they shall obey showing you creons power he has and no matter what the people think is right it’s up to Creon and his decisions because Creon only does what he wants not what others think which an important role in his downfall.…

Creon becomes more agitated when Antigone seemingly mocks him when captured for her crime. “She laughs at what she’s done . Well, in this case, if she gets her way and goes unpunished, then she’s the man here, not me.” (lines 548-550) Creon’s sexism and overwhelming need for subordination allows him to see no other way for Antigone, except for her punishment, death.…

If creon lets antigone go unpunished people will think he doesn’t have a backbone and is a hypocrite and that he goes with public opinion. However if he does go through with the punishment people will think of him more like a dictator than a good leader. Creon doesn’t realize his faults till the end where he is not able to save his loved ones. Antigone hangs herself, Creon’s wife kills herself, Haemon kills himself with a knife as well and it becomes Creon’s fault when he cares more about what the city thinks rather than his family and doing what is…

He finally decides to end the fight with the will of the gods and start on a new road. Sophocles shows us that Creon is determined to take the path of righteousness as Creon states, “I must personally undo what I have done” (925-26). Antigone, loyal and determined, exhibits those qualities, one scholar even describes her as a “heroine” (Holland 323). Because of Antigone’s “…absolute focus on her goal,” burring her brother and living up to the holy laws of God, “there is “no doubt she loves her own,” and only wants what is morally proper and for God’s will to be done (McNeill 1). Antigone fights for what she believes in,” to show respect and love towards her,” and what she believes her brother deserves (Conflicting Values in Antigone 1). Creon, who “makes his ruling because Polyneices attacked Thebes with by army,” undeniably wants to protect his people (King Creon in Antigone 1). As clearly portrayed in the play, Creon evidently loves his wife and children, one could argue that he made his ruling to protect them. Courtesy of Chegg Study, Creon’s “power may have been taken for granted by the people of Thebes” had he not acted against Polyneices (Chegg1). While Antigone does meet certain criteria to be the plays tragic hero, Creon fits it more…

The feminism movement is a moderately new advance, which has grown increasingly popular over the past two hundred years. Even though the venture of women gaining equality with men is relatively fresh, women who have stood alone as feminists have been around for a surprisingly long amount of time. Antigone is only one example of a classic role model to contemporary feminists. Antigone is comparable to modern-day feminists for three reasons: she confronts an authoritative institution run by men, attempts to defend her state from an intrusive supremacy, and she refuses to conform to her culturally uniform role as a woman.…

The play exemplifies the love that a family can protect each other with, and how this can connect an audience to the characters.
